Congrats Frenchie, now you can sell the peaked cap.

Hi Lynn, how did the Greek class go? My interest in the roots of languages stems from a general interest in all things and also, having a scientific background I regularly meet  words in derived from both Greek and Latin. My interest in language itself comes from, like you, trying to get my head around spoken & written Greek.

Incidentely I notice above that 'apxio' probably resulted in the English 'archive'.

Ian - AKA Iannis, Johann, Johannes, John, Juan, Iain (Shuan?) etc.

Sorry Ian, but you are not quite right.

The word archeo meaning old, ancient is written in Greek as apxaio and pronouned ar-hay-oh.

The word archio meaning files, archives, records is written apxeio and pronounced ar-hee-oh.

Different word altogether. Bit like the mix up between kalimera and kalamari. I once asked for a TV aerial when I wanted a candle (keraia - keri)!

Hi Hilary

Early to the office I see. I agree with all you say, in fact it is in total agreement with my earlier post before the one I made above, adding credibility to my original source.

Mixing the meanings through mis-pronounciation can have interesting results, when my boat was stolen in Italy the police spent several hours looking for a bag and could not understand why I was shouting for a helicopter to locate it.

Bit more drastic for you than the candle incident, eh?

In a way, no. As we travelled through Europe I had become aware that the hull was suffering from quite a bad osmosis effect (not easily diagnosed fibre glass hull disease). It would have cost a fortune to repair. By stealing it between Bari & Brindisi the thieves had saved me the equivalent of £150 ferry fees to Greece. Eventually when the insurance paid out only £100 was deducted as the excess, so it could be argued that I was left £50 up on the 'steal'.

(Should have been a smiley here but my laptop is recognising them as popups for some reason).

Ian
