Yes I think Eco's hit the nail on the head with Carpenter Bee.

Avatar is a bush cricket I believe.

The big flying beetles I've seen in May are not furry but hard crusty like - yuk although they do have a nice blue/black colour to them. Found a few dead ones under the sofa in July.

Hi DCV - I remember being bombed by those things near Michaelangelo one year. The waiter said they were crickets! My husband said "if they're crickets, I'm Buddy Holly!"

(you probably need to be of a certain age to appreciate the 'joke'!)
