We have also had the same problems in our cottage with (Sqirrels and rats)...There are a few things that you can do for your self..By filling all the holes in the roof with wire(chicken) netting(strunge into a ball and force into holes) cemeting any loose copeings and tiles ,( a handy hint get a cane go into loft and stick cane through the hole this can be done in the light of day as you will see light shineing through the holes)A cage to catch pine martins sqirrels or rats ECT thease cages can be got at most hard ware stores in corfu..
Or if you can get rat Poison(place in loft in the rat runs rats droppings are black in color and ovel about a hafe inch long)..I am luckey on that score getting it free from rentokil that goes around our brewery...If you can do this all your self that will be a saveing on getting pest control in....I hope this has been of help to you...And help to save you a few bob...Chris

Another way to discourage animals is to chop off any tree branches that they may be using to climb up with.

The rats used to enter the loft area on the electric cable so we tied a frizbee on it like all the locals in the village here do and it stops them running along the cable make sure its far enough away from the roof though as the rats can jump pretty well.

Thats also a good ideal..They done the same with the ships at the dock yards to stop the rats running up the rope ....BUT A FRIZBEE AROUND A ELECTRIC CABLE is it insulated by any chance....And turn off...lol..Chris
