For those of you who have made the permanent move to Corfu.

How did you cope with the initial upset of missing family when you first arrived in Corfu and does it get easier once you settle into your new life.

Hi

It isn't just family you miss, it is friends too. And there will be other things.  Really you just have to realise that this will happen before you go and work out how you are ging to live with it. It is easier said than done at times.  I think you have to do it on a day to day basis.  I miss my brother and his family so much but we didn't see each other every week let alone every day. They came over in summer and I was really upset when he said see you next year when they left, but that was because I was thinking about it being so far away.  If I don't think about seeing them it isn't so bad because I can phone and email whenever I like just as we did in the UK when there was also the option to pop over if I wanted to but I didn't choose to.  So if I look at it like that it is just the same.

I'm not making much sense am I ?  What I am trying to say is don't look long term and measure the absence.  It will be horrible and you will wish life away. Enjoy what you have chosen to do and be prepared to make a lot of phone calls!

Julia

I coped pretty well and stayed in touch via email.

What is hard is when someone becomes ill back in the UK.  All of a sudden, even though you can't do anything, you feel a long way away and helpless.

Hi

I intend to move out there within the next 2 yrs or so. My way of coping will be to take as many personal effects, photos, pictures, books etc with me as possible, including my pets and try to make my new home as comfortable as my old (including a decent bed!).

I have decided the best way of coping with missing my old life will be to concentrate on what I will NOT miss, such as intimidating "hooded" teenagers (thank God my son's not one), the ability to go for a drink without worrying about a fight breaking out, the weather, being shouted and sworn at at work by the more undesrable members of society that I have to deal with and a stress free and happy life in general. Role on the move, the more I think about it, the more I can't wait

Sue

I am coping because they insisted on coming with me!

I am sure the use of messenger and email makes it a lot more bearable but in no way can compensate leaving family and friends, I would miss my family so much. ONe day I hope to move out there, my parents are elderly and my daughter is nearly grown up but looking at this site I am sure there are loads of people who would make you feel welcome and give you hints and support. This site is fab!

 Sue,

I know what you mean. I have just come back from a month in Kassiopi. We have been going every year for 25 years. We know everyone in the small hamlet where we stay and have seen all the kids grow up and get married. We are too old to contemplate living there but hope to continue holidaying there for many more years to come.

From your post I think that you must work at the corner of London Rd. and Cherry Tree.

  All the best.........Alecko

In the UK, to see boisterous, scowling youngsters seems a threat.

They have carte clanche to do as they wish with no redress.

In Corfu, seeing smiling youngsters is a pleasure.
