The point is the car is in Corfu...yes I can easily drive it back to the UK...but...no MOT, no road licence....all the way across Europe.....not an inviting thought...

I was referring to the person leaving the UK for Corfu in which case the insurance can be covered for a few weeks in Europe.

One other thing.  For resident permit holders - it is illegal to own a Uk registered vehicle.

Hi Kev, I am a bit confused by this - is this the residents permit that you are required to get to stay on the island for more than 3 months?

I understood that to stay longer than 3 months you need a residents permit, but then how can you keep a UK registered car for 6 months, if it is illegal with the permit???

I apologise if I am being completely thick, but it seems like a bit of an anomoly to me

You can stay on Corfu for as long as you like without a residents permit.  It's in the EU.

Reasons to have one that I can think of are for running a business or for applying for a loan.  There may be others.

Someone else mentioned storing the car for a while. The criteria is that the vehicle is only on Corfu for six months.  If stopped you may be asked to prove that the vehicle was imported in the last six months via a ferry ticket for example.  Be careful with that.

Also, the chap that runs Customs at the port has a memory like an elephant.  he can even tell my friend the registration number of the car she came to Corfu in 25 years ago !!! I can't remember his name - Yiannis I think.

Hi Kev,

Thanks for the clarification, however I am positive I've seen a thread somewhere on this site that says you need a residents permit after 3 months.

I am definitely only staying for 6 months next year - I've rented a studio from 1st May to 31st Oct, so there will be no problems with customs etc.

Hi

I think if you are planning to be a resident rather than a visitor then you must apply for the resident's permit within 3 months of arriving on Corfu.

HI Kev

Re your comment above abour selling a car that has been driven to Corfu.  Note that if the vehicle is a "temporary import", under the relieving provisons for VAT purposes it is illegal to sell, or to offer to sell, or to let it on hire etc. such a vehicle.  Any such action will render it liable to seizure by the tax authorities. Of course, they have to find out first, but since the registration document may be in the wrong name after the sale......
