Sorry guys having a real panic moment - Hubby had his wallet stolen today - with everything in it Money, Cards and DRIVERS LICENCE I am a Complete Imbecile on the road in the UK - but get by- am terrified of driving in Corfu- although had planned to learn to be brave over the next two weeks in the countyside.....

Without a Driving Licence for MIke  are we going to be stuffed.?. albeit we are using a car hire co. we have been using for  a year and they are doing the typically lovley Corfiot thing about leaving it at the airport for us as we get in real early.........Please I am desperate.... Why does this always have to happen just before we leave - Do I HAVE to drive home ????????? Sorry I know this is a last minute panic -  but it's taken us all night to cancell credit cards etc - and they have already nicked £500 from his account ..aaaarrrggghh ..... Anyone up late or early tommorrw - with advice hugely appreciated - otherwise - it's Watch-out Corfu- I'm coming

Cheers Denise

Hi Denise

I don't know if you have left yet?  As you know, I know how you feel but it is fine once you get used to it. The worst thing is it is easy to get pressured by locals into doing silly things.  So try and take no notice of them.  Hard sometimes as some are completely reckless. Just make sure there is a good space between you and the car in front so that they can overtake you if necessary.

If you want I could try to come to pick you.   Or you could take a taxi and have the car sent instead to your house.  At least that way you could have your first attempts at driving in a quieter area.

I'll text you, in case you don't see this.

Julia

Hi Denise

I forgot my driving licence one year on holiday, the tour rep contacted the DVLA and had then fax over details of my licence which was enough for the hire company to give me the car. I have to state that this was not Corfu but the Canaries.  Perhaps your tour operator can adise if it will be acceptable in Corfu? Then if you have access to a fax machine maybe you could arrange this for your husband, or the tour company could do it for you?  at least you could then share the driving.

As far as the driving goes, even for us experienced drivers it is a little daunting at first, but you soon get used to it, main thing is don't panic!

Best of luck, and I hope you get to see this before you go.

Chris

HI Denise

If memory serves me correctly, drivers in Greece are required to carry their driving licences with them (the same rule applying to tourists).  If you don't have your licence, I suspect you may be guilty of an offence, which may cause problems if you are stopped by the police.  On this basis, it probably isn't woth while taking the chance (unless you want Mike off your hands for a while! LOL).

Driving in Corfu isn't that bad, provided you take your time and concentrate at all times - try not to get distracted from the views. Take care at the blind bends on mountain roads and look out for the mirrors which will show you if anything is coming the other way.  Also, let local traffic overtake when you can - you may have all the time in the world as you are on holiday, but locals are working and may be busy.

Due to my current incapacity, Lynn drove us when out in Corfu in August (I ahve always done all of the driving)ans even she says it isn't too bad.

Hi

I would advise staying on right hand side of road, being in the middle tends to cause problems

It certainly could!

I had to swerve to avoid an oncoming van which was in the middle of the road, and ended up falling into and getting wedged in a ditch! Fortunately 5 greek locals appeared as if by magic, and manually lifted us out (after a lot of rapid conversation and gesticulating between themselves).

That was my first experience of driving in Corfu. I've been driving for over 10 years with never an accident so I was mortified! Fortunately no damage to the car. Thank heavens for the kind hearted locals - who needs the AA on Corfu???

I'm going back for my second attempt at driving there in 10 days time - hopefully I'll have more success and stay on the road this time!

Hope I've not put you off Denise - I really enjoyed driving there up until then

Cheers

Denise

I'm sure you will be fine - it just takes a while to adjust to sitting on the left, and judging the width of the road. I was always banging my hand against the drivers side door, trying to change gear on the left instead of the right

Have a great time in Corfu and maybe I'll bump into you when I get there - hopefully not literally!!

Hi Denisew - just a quick thought. Was hubby's licence one of the new pink photo type ones? If it was, try taking the green paper bit with you - they may well accept this as being proof of his driving licence.

LOL & have a great time...........Jedi
