Hi,

We are paying for our property in Corfu using a euro cheque which we will be getting from our bank (Abbey).  We have asked Abbey about obtaining the pink slip but, they don't seem to know anything about it.

Can anyone tell us where we are going wrong.

Thanks in advance

Tony

Hi Tony.

Be advised they are not called Pink Slips anymore, although usually referred to as such. You need to inform you bank that you require a certificate of proof that the money has come from/earned in the UK.

Please look through this forum, you will find many threads on purchasing property in Corfu, and what is required to do this.

Best Wishes.

Hi Tony,

If you are paying the cheque to an estate agent I think they should get the "pink slip" for you.

Whatever they are called now (and you will find that the bank staff still refer to them as pink slips) you must have one.

I don't think a UK bank letter will suffice as proof that the money was earned/came from abroad in the long term.  Why not have the money transferred to a Greek bank account ?  This way - the proof will be provided by a Greek bank.

Regards

Tony,

Please be very careful, I really suggest you open a bank account here and have the money transferred to it (I was under the impression that it was mandatory to have a Greek bank account if you were purchasing property here) you certainly must have a tax number prior purchasing, the bank/accountant will advise you on what you need for your tax return.

You must do a tax return for this year, next Jan. Feb. accountants are easy to find and it will cost you 60Euros

I am surprised you were not advised of this through whom you are buying the property.

Roly

Hi Tony

As is mentioned above they still issue pink slips at the bank for money imported from outside greece.

If you are buying the property through an agent then insist that they obtain the pink slip on your behalf.

But as you will require an account in Greece if you want to pay the electricty bill by direct debit then open an acount in your name (you will require a greek tax number to do this and passport)then ask for the pink slip when the money is paid into your account and ensure that they endorse it with

agopa akinhtoy which means the money is for purchase of land for building

good luck with your purchase

Doug

Pink slip seem to be an ongoing problem ... We have finally got "some" from our agent but it does not appear to be something your  local "corfu" bank does for you - even tho they know the money has been transfered from the UK - going out on Friday and hope to be able to resolve this ocne and for all - will keep you posted!!!!!

Hi Denise,

We got our 'pink slips' from our local 'Corfu'Alpha Bank Branch no problem at all.

And Doug,

When I opened our Bank Account last year all I needed was my passport and a photocopy of my husbands. There was no mention of Tax Numbers until we were actually living here and ready to buy our house.

The lawyers we recommend obtain the so-called pink slip (now as someone rightly said it is now a certificate of transfer) from the bank on behalf of the clients.

I would be very wary about purchasing in any other way than transferring funds to a Greek bank. An English couple recently got stung with a tax bill of over 20,000 euros because they were badly advised.

You don't NEED a tax number to open a bank account, but since getting one is part of the procedure of buying property it's usually all done more or less at the same time. One good option is to make a power of attorney so that the solictor can do all the running. Some are more willing than others.
