What is the best way to see some of the City it will be breakfast time when I get there is the old town far what is the safest form of travel etc .

All ideas welcome

I had the same problems at the end of last year but found the bus to the city centre great and only 3.20 euro's each way.

Hi Jane

Do not worry, you will be safe in Athens great place to spend a day, lots to see all very central. What Nigels site tells you about the Metro system  is true, it takes approx 35 mins into central Athens, one bit of help i could also add is make sure you buy 10 euro ticket (bit misleading to non greeks) you will get fined if  you buy the 3 euro one.

If you are not sure at any time look around find anyone under 30 and they will almost for sure have some English. --ENJOY.

As Sweeny says Athens is pretty safe no matter how you travel including on foot, especially during the day, so don't worry. As others have said you can take the new Metro from the airport and one of the stops is practically at the foot of the Acropolis. There are archaeological exhibits in the Metro in that neighbourhood.

You could go up the Acropolis and see the Parthenon (it's a much better temperature for that in Feb than in July when we went!) and/or walk around Plaka, shop, relax in a cafe or taverna...many of them have wonderful views of the ancient monuments. There are quite a few pedestrian-only streets in Plaka now, which makes it pleasant to explore.

Enjoy your day!

Hi All

Thank you everyone much appreciated I am looking forward to exploring and taking some photos, Plaka is a place which sounds interesting & always wanted to see the Acropolis.

I might even be able to speak a little greek , just back tonight from my Greek class, so many words going on in my head one day it all might make sense. So

Easy:- Go to the Acropolis, The Parthenon, and Plaka. Have fun with those....checked them out for the first time last month. The Metro is excellent and cheap. Until the new Museum opens in the Spring, central Athens hasn"t got a massive deal for sight-seeing to be honest.

Jane

I was on my own in April last year. You will be very safe. I just make sure I do what I do in any city, look like you know where you are going, don't stand around with maps (mind you we did that in Belfast recently and each time several people came along asking if we needed help). The bus stops outside the Parliment building and you can catch it there again for the return trip. You buy the ticket at a booth then punch it on the bus. Athens Airport site gives details of times. If you are travelling on with the same airline you won't have to bother with left luggage but I was in & out of the airport and left luggage within half an hour. You can't get lost as you can orientate around the Acropolis. The shops and streets were lovely and quiet, just a few tourists around. In fact a couple of shops addressed me in Greek to start off with as they were still in Winter mode.
