Hi Ang

We have driven fairly extensively through europe during the winter months and must admit snow chains were not necessary as the main drags were always clear... however.. it`s a good idea.

Vinyet??? I am hoping to god you mean high vis vests? These we have... I do hope you are not referring to something that only I have never heard of and, as a result, the entire CTG are cracking up laughing at me!!

Angie, you will need a vignette to drive either through Austria or Switzerland. We never drive through Switzerland though as we usually carry new purchases and as they are not a EU country you are technically importing them into Switzerland and then again into the EU as you leave. For Austria you can buy the vignette at a sales place which is on the border and is well signposted with a picture of the vignette and the word vignette clearly shown. They cost seven euro eighty cents which gives you ten days driving but you only really need about two hours to drive through, even with heavy traffic.  Snow chain are compulsary so if it snows and you get held up because you don't have any expect a heavy fine. Don't forget that if you have a 4 wheel drive car you need 2 sets (one for front and one for back wheels).

Sorry, can't help with Switzerland but try this link http://driving.drive-alive.co.uk/driving-in-switzerland.htm .

Perhaps its an Austrian head scarf - could they be compulsory out there LOL

Angie, its the road tax applied to visitors passing through, its the same in Switzerland.

I dont know how you get one for Austria, but Switzerland is dead easy, as you enter the countrys borders, all cars without the correct sticker applied to the windscreen are directed to one side where a lady sells you a sticker for 30euros.

What I did'nt know was that there are strict rules in Switzerland as to how much booze you can carry into the country, lucky for us in our ignorance we were'nt asked to open the boot.

Bob.

Yes Bob, as I said, it's not an EU country so you are only allowed 1 litre each, the same when you are coming out.

Hi Angie, I have been working very hard and have not had time to read posts on the site recently. I have just caught up with this thread.

Good luck and I hope everything else is plain sailing for you. We are dead envious though.

Im sure all this about vignettes and snow chains will be easy to organise. Have a fantastic time and enjoy your new home and life.
