Hi My name is Chris,

Im a plumber by trade and moving to Greece, Sidari in January 2005 with my girlfriend. However I will be looking for plumbing/construction work. Could anyone please give me any advice or information on how to get started. Also any information on local companys I may be able to register with in order to find some work. Finally I would be gratful of any knowledge of the plumbing systems used in Corfu?

Thanks,

Chris <SCRIPT language=javascript>postamble();

Hi Chris

I cannot help with the rest of your query but below is a link to a recent thread in this forum which may give you some idea about greek plumbing.

Chris.

One of the main differences is that the whole bathroom wastes are linked to a common central trap, a bit like a multi inlt back-inlet gully, it has a grid at tile surface height, and the falls on the floor should run to it. hence there is no need for a shower tray and curtain, except that the loo gets wet.

All systems are mains or pressure pump fed.

There are very limited choices of compression and threaded fittings, and things like multi-quicks dont exist., You make the concealed bottom connection to the WC pan by belling a 4" plastic pipe to fit the spigot on the pan and then prefix the pipe before siliconeing the formed  socket and the spigot and lowering the pan into place, blind.

In addition to 15 and 22 and 28 copper pipe, there are 18 and 20mm.

Plastic coated copper is often specified,

Do you read Greek?

You will need to. As well as speak it.

Expect plenty of calls in the winter at 3AM when it is cold, and peoples sterna lift pump diaphrams stick.

Luck, Bob.

Bob,

Thanks very much for that, that was really useful. It isnt that much diffrent to how we do things in the uk however as you pointed out my downfall is I dont speak Greek or read it. My girlfriend is Greek and her father is so im hoping he is setting me up with a greek plumber/general odd job man inorder to learn the ropes....fingers crossed!

Do you think the Summer will be busy as well as the winter? Do many English plumbers succed? Would it be difficult to adapt from English plumbing to Greek as by the sound of things it would appear to be a little lazy?

Thanks very much,

Chris

Chris

I might have a job for you if you're interested.

The job is 14 radiators Central Heating system, oil-fired boiler, three
bathrooms and Solar heating.  Having received several unexplainably high
quotes from local Greeks I am thinking about doing it myself but could do
with some help or another quote.

I am at the stage of planning to lay pipe to all the rads. It's going to be
sunken into a concrete slab and screeded in. I am trying to decide whether
to use a plastic sheathed pipe like Kuterlex (double if possible with outlet
and return webbed together) or normal copper, what size pipe to use
(probably 15mm) and whether to lay it in a conduit for easy maintenance,
protection and to allow explansion.

When are you next over there?

Cheers
Nic

We can have a sort out then.

Let me know if this will be okay.
