Hi All.........I agree with graham....we are building on a 45 degree slope and all retaining walls etc are tied in to the main building by steel reinforced concrete. The building engineers on Corfu are very technically qualified to design the structures for stresses etc.

The worst that can happen is we end up at the bottom of the plot , but still in one piece !!! and with different views !!!

Regards.....John & HIlary

During our visit last week, we visited Interamerican insurance in Corfu town.  The agent informed us that the recent tremors were in fact caused by increased quarry activities and were not natural occurrances.  Apparently (According to her) because their licence is due to expire shortly they have been blasting at night time on a regular basis.

We also asked about earthquake insurance and were quoted 3x the standard rate.  My reaction to this was that the insurance company must percieve a fairly high risk.  She explained that Corfu was grouped (Incorrectly) with other islands where the risk was in fact higher but it was likely that a planned reassessment would place Corfu in a low risk category.

Dear Graham

In your message you say "There is so much steel built into the houses in Greece that it would be almost impossible for much damage to happen nowadays except in the old houses where a ringbeam has not yet been put in."

Have you already forgotten all the Greeks who were killed or injured a couple of years ago in the earthquake in Athens? Many were in new blocks and buildings. There are still thousands in temporary accomodation , living in makeshift shelters and tents. Or did you never hear about that quake?

No one should worry without cause, but all should be prepared and know what to do if the worst should happen.......

We cant remember anything about people being killed or made homeless in Athens. How many people where involved? There are 'thousands' still in tempary accomadation? It must have been pretty big. Tell me more.

I remember an earthquake in Turkey when approx 50,000 died and then another one in the USA which was bigger and only a very small number died.

This is the only recent Athens earthquake I can find (Sept 99).

Yes there were many casualties and temporary housing was used..........

Hi all,

There was quite a nasty earthquake on Lefkas in August 2003, maybe this is the one that 2tonsils was thinking of?

*update* on reading the details on Jo's link, maybe I am wrong, the Athens quake was much worse than the Lefkas one! Still nasty though

Hi Dean,

I remember this quake vividly on the news in september 99, it was just after we and Andreas from Athens had just returned home from  our holiday in cyprus.

Hi Jo,

I hope your friend was OK, It looks like it did a lot of damage, just makes you see what a fragile planet this really is, compared to the forces of nature.

Dean
