<SCRIPT language=javascript>postamble(); ....Sounds very scary to me.... so you are saying the north east side of Corfu is the better pace to be,just to be on the safer side of earth tremors...chris

Sorry Chris, no, the fault under the ground will just be a bit deeper there, oftewn this can lead to a bigger quake. However the East coast is more rocky at surface with no sedimentary deposits or drape deposits like sandstone/mudstone,  sand and clay like on West coast which in an earthquake would tend to wobble more or even slip slide away.

I have bought land with clay surface by way, and on a steep slope, and architects tend to design adequate foundations to stop my and others future villas turning into the worlds biggest bobsleighs

Oh dear this does sound quite worrying, there have been quite a few tremors/quakes lately.  I hope it calms down soon

<SCRIPT language=javascript>postamble(); SO...Ian..just as i thought..its like england (being on a volcanic island)because it is on solid rock it would be more throne to a bigger tremor causing more damage if we ever had a big one over hear in england(oops sorry you are in england at the moment)...chris

ps they do say we have at lease 10 small tremors a day with the odd big one from time to time i believe.....

Seismologists say that there is nothing to worry about, (though they always do, don't they).  I don't see how they can predict activity for about 10 days as they have done, and yet never seem able to predict a large quake before it happens.

We've moved all our ornaments, breakables, etc., off shelves and onto the floor (where I promptly kicked one over!).

The one at 4am this morning was a corker.  We all got out of bed and wandered around for a bit, and then tried to get back to sleep.

No big ones after that, but quite a few small rumbles which joined with the thunder at some point to make it seem as if we were being attacked from all sides!

Another one today at 2.15pm, it was not too bad.  It shook the ornaments though & reminded me that I must do the dusting this week.

Here I am in Corfu and never felt a thing. I've only ever felt one Earth tremor in my life and it was in England last year. The East coast of Corfu has less problems with mud slides and tremors as there is more rock. Most of the houses in our village are over 100 years old and I cant find even a teany crack in any of them. I think people are getting too worried about these things.

Be happy, don't worry.

Im sorry Graham but i strongly disagree. As you said yourself you did not feel yesterdays tremor, if you had felt it i think you might have a slightly altered opinion, i believe that it would be wrong to go over the top at every opportunity but in this day+age can anyone be too cautious? i myself will not worry too much but i feel that if i were not concerned it would make me rather irresponsible.

As I said, I felt the one in England last year but I am not going to spend my life worrying about it. There are tremors all over the world all the time but occasionally a big one hits somewhere. Scientists seem unable to predict these. It won't help if we all worry a lot and get paranoid about it. If it happens it happens . There is nothing I can do to stop it. I only wish I could.

There is so much steel built into the houses in Greece that it would be almost impossible for much damage to happen nowadays except in the old houses where a ringbeam has not yet been put in. Most of the problems throughout the world have happened where strict building rules do not apply and buildings have collapsed because of poor build quality.  I am concerned about this but can do nothing about the building regulations in countries like Turkey where thousands died due to rouge builders and the lack of building regulations.

Don't worry. Be happy.
