Good heavens was it really 4?  Obviously I didn't get the full force.  Felt rather like an HGV driving past the house does sometimes, a heavy rumble and it's gone.

How fascinating, I think.

According to Corfu tv it was a 4 and the epicenter was actually Corfu. Usually we get the tremors from earthquakes in other areas. The one on the 7th December was just off Corfu, near to Albania.

Yes, We live at Palaiokastritsa and have noticed the tremors over the last few days. Have also noticed all the loose boulders and stones that have come down over the past few days, off the mountain behind us and the stone walls.

The quake last night made a rumbling noise which sounded like it was under the ground, just before the ground shook three times. Do they usually make a noise? It really annoyed me, it made me miss the  bit of a tv documentary I had waited all night to see!

It would be interesting to find out if the tremor was felt all over the island. We definitely felt it in Palaiokastritsa, it felt like three hard bumps from under the floor, not so much a shake, as a thump! I noticed Nathan said he felt it, and that is quite some distance from Palaiokastritsa.

Just in case, I have been to town to pay up my insurance policy, which covers us for all risks, including earthquakes. You never know.........

Hi 2Tonsils,

Funny that - I too made a trip to the insurance man today!  We have building and contents policy, but are not insured against earthquakes.  So now I can tell anyone who is interested that I was quoted 635 euros per year for a policy that includes the building only (not contents) against earthquake and various other possibilities - fire, forest fire, planes falling from the sky, terrorist attacks, etc.  I thought that was quite expensive and would love to hear from anyone who has found anything cheaper.  2Tonsils, maybe?  Think how much we have saved by not paying for the last 20 odd years!

I live in Skripero and last night's earthquake shook a few things off shelves.  All the quakes we have been having in the last few days have been noisy, but that one was LOUD.  Apparently we can expect more of the same for about 10 days - though so far today it has been relatively quiet.

Susanna,

We pay much less for cover including earthquakes etc.  It probably goes on house size as well but I am talking about 300 euros less.  Terry isn't here and he paid it so I will check how much it was and what it covered.  It was with Ethniki.

Nothing fell off our walls, it was the rumble I noticed and possibly one shake.  We are further away again though, near Aqualand.

In August 2003 we stopped in Dassia and there was an earthquake then. It woke most of the hotel up in the night but i slept through it.

Another one early hours of this morning 4.00am.

Nearly knocked me off my feet & the pets went crazy, it was very strong.

I live in Roda & felt it.

Has Corfu had any major earthquakes?

Are we brewing up for one?

Sammi

I managed to sleep through that one, though my friends in Gardelades felt it and said it was very strong. Their child woke up in a panic and they thought about having to make a run for it in the car! There was also a lot of underground rumbling during last night, but we thought it might be caused by something at the submarine base.

Are we going to have a strong earthquake- I don't know, but it is worth thinking what you should do in case it does happen! We have moved our bed to the opposite side of the room, as the place where our heads are usually backs onto the mountain behind us, and we have lots of stones coming down from the mountainside at the moment.Better safe than sorry!

Perhaps we should all pray to St Spiridon to protect us. Do feel that someone is going to kop it with a big quake though!

We felt a long, strong tremor in town at ten past one this afternoon (Tuesday 25th). We had just got into the car when there was a close strike of lightning and a deep rumble of thunder that shook the ground. But as the thunder stopped the ground continued to move the car for a good ten seconds longer.

I have lived here for ten years. I have never known so much seismic activity, one tremor after the other. In summer 2003 we had a very strong tremor in Palaiokastritsa that shook doors windows and floors. The light bulb swung till it was almost touching the ceiling on either side

In 1995 we had a strong tremor in town in the winter that made the whole four storey building sway, it lasted about 15 seconds, and the children in the school where I worked were terrified. They had been taught to stand under the door frame, or go under the desks, which they did.

Hi

Just found this topic again after a long time, so thanks for your comments on my post very much earlier Bob, (interesting to us dweebs anyway eh).

Susanna, these earthquake guys normally speak in timescales of a least decades, its so difficult to narrow down predictions past this.

Damian, I think you'll find the plate margins/main fault lines actually run to the west of both Kefalonia and Corfu with the Kefallonia one being a strike-slip fault much like the san andreas one in Calafornia and around Corfu a normal one with the African plate sliding under the European one. Depends upon depth of the quake as to where it will hit and at what strength to a degree but difficult to predict anyway Corfu might lie about 50km from fault at surface but it is maybe about 30km deep as it passes directly underneath. The African plate isn't moving very fast under the European one the further North you go so better news for Corfu, worse towards Crete.

Whatever, hope everyone manages to hang on if you get a beauty.

Ian
