We filled our pool for the first time last summer and left it uncovered, full of water over the winter.  Now we're not sure whether to empty and refill it for this summer, or to add chemicals and switch on the pump!  Any advice?

Thanks,

Tony

Hi
I would imagine you could give your pool a good sweep and clean it as soon as you arrive, put the chemicals in and turn on the filter pump and see if it starts to clear. If it clears carry on treating it and taking regular tests

I will try and get some more info tomorrow as I worked for the council's local pools for 33 years, but it is a while since I passed my pool plant operators course. I will ask one of our managers for you try and save you from emptying it.

However someone may have already done this on Corfu safely.

Hi Tony

I have used the same water in my pool for the last four years at the end of the season I add a special chemical for the winter months which keeps the water clear until spring time, then I add Shock Clor to the water and a fluid for alge. The manufacturer for my pool says that you need to change the water every five years.

Hi Andy,

I posted the message below and wondered of you can help. Is your pool in Corfu?

Just wondered how people manage their pools in the winter if you're not living in the property?

Do you use a cover? I know you can get pool covers and waterbags to hold the cover on. Does anyone know where you can get waterbags from?

Also, what do you do in the summer about maintaining the pool if you're not there?

Many thanks

We have had the 'same' water in our pool in Corfu for 4 or 5 years.

At the end of October we take the pump out to stop it from corroding too much (pump house underground - BIG mistake - NEVER do it!!), then empty about 2 feet of water and chuck in half a dozen chlorine tabs and leave it.

The winter storms usually means that someone has to go and take more water out 2 or 3 times in the winter and they also put in some more chlorine tabs as necessary.

Result is that at the end of April the pool looks filthy with leaves and dirt etc on the bottom but the water is clear.

We put the pump back in, top the pool up, vacuum  and backwash 2 or 3 times over the next few days and it is as good as new. First time I saw the pool after the winter I panicked, but now I know it will recover in no time at all.

Plus bear in mind everyone is talking about a water shortage this year after the mild winter so as much water than can be saved the better.

Regarding maintenance in the summer if you are not there we use Apostolis Kazianis who is great and looks after pools all over the island. PM me and I will give you his number and contact details.

Re pool covers they are available in town but not ideal in summer.

..Isn't that a bit dangerous just chucking in Chlorine tablets with out first weighing out the options of how many tablets to the gallon...We also use chlorine tablets at our brewery for sterilizing pipe work in our soak tanks..I know we are talking industrial use as ours are very strong just using 12 tablets for 100 gallons of water. And checks are made every three days to verify its strength with a testing kit...There are guide lines to how meny you shoud use par gallons.... Chlorine is very dangerious if not use in the right contence...And if mixed with other chemicals....Chris
