Hi Everyone,
After spending a great deal of time "researching" this site, I have a question for those of you who have left lives elsewhere to live on Corfu (if you would be so kind).
How has living on Corfu changed your life? What were you expecting when you made the decision? Has it met your expectations? Is there anyone who can say lif was full of stress and crap and now it's not? What's been the best part of moving to Corfu? The worst?
I'm just curious and would love to hear your experiences if you feel like sharing.
Thanks!

The responses you will get are all personal and everyone is looking for different goals in life.

Personally,I have lived here full time for 2 years and do not regret the move.I have left the rat race and have more leisure time than I could have expected in the Uk.You have to blend in to the way of life here or you would go mad at the lack of urgency that most tradesmen view the importance of your jobs to be done, and the red tape with government bodies.

If you have to work here life could be difficult due to the shortage and seasonality of the work.I am fortunate that I do not have to work and so I have less stress worrying were the money for the bills are coming from.

The key is to plan what you want and what you require to sustain your type of living standards.

All the best with your rearch.

Doug

Thanks, Doug.

I appreciate your input.  I was just noticing that a lot of the folks who live on Corfu or are in the midst of moving have signatures similar to yours.  You know, the carpe diem sentiment ( a good one, to be sure).  It's easy to be an expat wannabe (which i am), so i'm interested in the experiences of others.  I know everyone has different goals and dreams, but wonder if there's some commonaility that draws folks to this one place rather than another.  It might be a complete no-brainer.....if given the choice, and it's an affordable option, why wouldn't anyone want to live in such a lovely place?

I guess I'm just nosey about the lives of others...particularly when they pull up stakes in one country and settle in another for a good long time.

We have lived here thirteen years ( all the year round). We moved here because we thought we would find a simpler, less stressful life, in a country that was safer than the one we were living in, England.

We lived in an area in the UK where crime was an everyday problem, and stress was with us constantly. We find Corfu a much safer place to live in, and I appreciate this very much.

We do have less stress here, but it is not stress free. As Doug says, the red tape and lack of urgency to get things done can drive you crazy if you let it. You have to learn to "go with the flow". Stand in the queues in the offices with a greek coffee in one hand and a cheese pie in the other, and treat it as an adventure. If you get anything done at all, celebrate your success. If not, try again another day.

On the other hand, we have a much better quality of life than we would have had in the UK if we had stayed. We have adapted to the Greek way of life, and live happily in the middle of a traditional village. The villagers treat us with the same respect and friendliness we show to them.

Would we ever leave to go back to the UK? You must be joking!

I am not really qualified to answer properly at present, as just in the process of moving.  Flight booked for 31st March - one way!

Going to live with a man I have known for 10 years, but only a couple of weeks per year here and there, so don't really 'know' him.   Have given up a fairly good job here in the UK, let out my house, sold most of my possessions (which i found i didn't really need or even like in some cases!), sent the rest of them to Corfu, along with my cat!    Not sure if i will secure a job in time for the season start, but fingers crossed.

Having said all that, I will be 40 this year and have decided that after 39.5 years of 'toeing the line', it is time for me to follow my heart, and start to live life to the full instead of just putting one foot in front of the other.    Scared?  Too right!    too scared to go?   not on your life - life IS for living as so many others have said.

As 2tonsils said, i hope i am suitably prepared for the lack of urgency, but have to say - the red tape i encountered here trying to wrap this life up was far more than i expected - but fingers crossed - well worth it!

I will be watching this thread with interest as to how others are getting on.   Wish me luck!

Tiddles xx

Hi 2Tonsils. Do you speak fluent Greek now? If you do, did you learn before going out or learn once there over time?

Thirteen years, that must be some kind of record, well done, it's great to hear of success like yours.

Hi all - thanks for the good wishes.  I'm off to the North West area of the island, Avliotes, which is a village near to San Stef NW and Arilas.   My cat has been there just over a week, so will probably have a better understanding of Greek then me when i get there!  lol lol
