Hi Tee

I am so sorry to hear about your plight with the puppy. I am going through a very harrowing experience myself with a stray dog. You may have seen the threads and comments about Teabag - his picture is my avatar. Please read the thread on this section called *Please, Please help needed* and one on the Holiday questions section supporting Teabag.

I am highlighting this story for you so that you can see that people DO care about animals on Corfu. The AAWF do a fantastic job helping the dog and cat population on the island. I am caring for Teabag with both practical and financial help from the charity. With their help I will care for Teabag and get him on the road to recovery and again with thier help rehome him later on.

I can't add to what people have said above me. We do try our best and the charity work extremely hard, without pay or gain, to try and make things better. But .... without government help, without the help of the vetenary organisations, without funding and without the support of the Greek (and sometimes English) communities, there is only so much they can do! People are so quick to judge and comment on the situation here but don't help financially or physically. We need to raise awareness and raise cash to get the situation under control. I know of many people that are commited to doing this and do a wonderful job.

Tee, you could help too, as said before by raising awareness and raising financial help. If more people worked together then we could get Corfu back on an even keel regarding the animals. People have to start thinking about their animals, a tiny effort from many people could make a huge difference here, after all it is only a small island, with everyne pulling together we coulod make a fantastic difference.

There is *NO* one stop quick fix, it is going to take time, money and hard work and the people of the AAWF are commited to this plight in every way. However, as things atand, it is a very slow, heartbreaking and thankless task, but they wont give up. There will be a light at the end of the tunnel if more support is forthcoming!

Dee

Hi Tee

I understand your frustrations and concerns about the stray animals here in Corfu, but as been stated in previous comments there is no assistance from the government to help this sad situation.I have worked for the Ark and all the people involved ( Greek ,British,Dutch etc) worked for no pay to help to raise funds and rehome unwanted animals. One Dutch lady in Benitses permanently has about 8 dogs at her home while she is trying to rehome either here in Corfu or abroad.I personaly have fostered dogs and puppies at my own expense but as you say it's hard to rehome these animals.

Let's hope we can get a good kennels to take care of these animals.

Kennels are not the answer are they???

We could fill any amount of kennels with stray dogs from this Island and then what do you do with them????

Neutering, education and government involvement are the only answers. Until then nothing will ever change.

I sincerely hope that this dog that Tee has found and rehomed is neutered by its new owners and does not produce another litter of puppies for her to try and get us to take responsibility for.

Knowing Tee (and I know her) I'm sure that she will tell the owners of the rehomed dog to neuter the dog so there wont be any more puppies. I know her attitude towards cats and dogs and she takes real good care of the ones she already has. But when I see her in June, I will ask her about the dog and let you know.

While living in Corfu, my wife Julie and I rescued a puppy who was born in Nissaki in 1993.  We brought her back to the UK with us when we returned.  She was a beautiful dog with the most gentle and loving personality.

Sadly, she died suddenly in 2005, but we are still left with wonderful, happy memories of her during those 12 short years.   We miss her terribly even now.

My map of the island is dedicated to her, and is sold via this website  and on Ebay.  For every map sale, here or on Ebay,  I donate 70 pence (about 1 Euro) to the AAWF in Bonnies memory.

Like us, Bonnie seemed to love and respect all animals, whether other dogs, cats, horses, sheep, - even frogs!

So if you are going to Corfu this summer, please remember that there is no other map worth getting of this island.  A handful of previous posts are scattered here and there on this website attesting to its quality and accuracy, even now 10 years after it was published.

So do yourself a favour - and Corfu's animals - and order the map while there are still limited copies available.

It has made so many peoples' holidays that much more enjoyable - and could make your's too.

Keep up the brilliant work all you volunteers at the AAWF!  Thank you.

Stephan
