Hi Karol

Now there is a subject close to my heart.  I have 17 years of experience of working with learning difficulties.  I have just left management where I supported older carers of someone with a learning difficulty.  My carers were aged between 60 and 92 and their offspring, 40 to 60.

I too want to relocate to Corfu in about 2 years so, this post has been helpful to me too.  Didnt quite understand the comment about the climate being bad for your son.  He has downs syndrome not a chest condition.

I think any climate has to be better than there.  Yes it can get damp but in England it lasts for months.  I'm looking at it now.

You do what's right for you.  Send me an e mail if you do relocate.  You never know, I may come in useful if you need me.  Take care, Belinda x

Belinda,

People with Down's Syndrome often have all kinds of other conditions.  My nephew for example, had heart problems.

My seven year old son has Downs Syndrome too. When he was little he had a permanent chest infection, but thankfully as he has got older he seems to be getting them less frequently. I admire you Karol, i wish i dare up sticks and move to somewhere sunnier, but i am too much of a worrier for my own good !

Good luck to you all, i hope you get sorted

Angela

Karol

Please think about what has been said about the winter climate - the people who have posted have extensive first-hand experience and it really is something to consider before making a permanent decision.

Perhaps you could try a long-term rent and spend a whole winter on the island before committing yourself and your family?

I'm not saying you would definitely find it a problem but it would save possible heartbreak later on if you just give it a "test-run" first.

Whatever you decide, I hoe it works out for you.

Stuart

Oops sorry, its difficult to post without upsetting someone.  I am well aware of related conditions relating to Downs having worked with these special people for most of my working life.  I work in a day centre where the average age is now over 40+

The point I was making is that I didnt feel it was really relevant to the question about schools.  Karol knows her own son best and like she said, she is aware of what she is doing.  We all know about the damp weather in Corfu, but, it cant be worse than here.

And as karol says, her son seems to come 'alive' there.  Don't bother with Crete (my opinion only) its just not Corfu is it.  Good luck Karol.  Belinda

thak you to all for the most recent replys.

me & my husband decided after reece (is downs) was born our family life would not be any different in any way possible, the future was always going to be a worry but you have to get on with it.

we dont see reece any different than our other two boys, we are just an ordinary family (what is an ordinary family anyway) that wants to relocate to corfu, of course i have to think of everybodys intrest thats why we are going for a minimum of 6 months but we will keep our options open. The plan is not to come back, im not going to sell my house untill we have lived in corfu for atleast 12 months & the children are settled in schools ect..

my motto in life is??? you only have one so make the most of it reguardless of past, presant & future
