Hi All,

Sorry to post this topic again! I know there is a lot of info about iternet access in the forum pages already, but much of it is getting quite out dated.

Assuming that things are moving forward (broadband wise), what is the current state of play?

We are having a house built near Temploni, and I am trying to organise a broadband enabled telephone line by the time we move over.

Have I got my facts right?

  • I need to speak to OTENET about getting the line installed.
  • I can then choose whether to use FORTHNET or OTENET for ...
  • phone line and / or broadband?
  • 1MB is available?
  • Initial set up costs are high???
  • Ongoing costs are about 30 euros per month?
  • It takes a long time to get set up?

Maybe I'm miles off, but you guys are very good at setting us straight!

Wayne.

Thanks Jeremy, that's a really useful post! I remembered reading it actually, but couldn't find it when I searched for 'broadband' as it doesn't appear in the thread!

So I guess the question really is:   Forthnet or OTE?

Given the choice, who would you choose and why?

You can get more information from the English versions of the OTE and Forthnet sites:

It is certainly spreading on the island. We are in a rural area (Afra) where ADSL is now possible but there is a waiting list as there is not the capacity at the local exchange. You may find when you check with Ote or another provider that they may have a waiting list.

We now have ADSL at the Agni Travel office and any day at the taverna! 1MB download speed which is fine. I will install wireless routers so members can take advantage of the service - either here at the taverna or outside of the Agni Travel office - will arrange extra seating!

We signed with OTE, who were brilliant and very helpful.

Good idea Nathan - you'll have to start up a cafe/bar at Agni Travel to cater for the increased trade from your WiFi customers!

OTE upgraded the Skripero exchange over the weekend, which means they've doubled the downstream speed for free - ie if you were previously on 512K, you should now be on 1mb.

And if you were on 1mb, you're now on 2mb ;)

I've just heard that they've adsl-enabled the Benitses exchange, so people darn sarf can get it too.
