Hi All

Not sure if this has been asked before but we are about to do the trip with doggie in tow and would like to know if anyone has any recommendations for hotels en route to Venice that welcome dogs or if anyone else has had experience of good hotels that like dogs along the way.

Many thanks.

Amanda :)

Ibis Hotels are pet friendly and found across France and Italy.

Hi Amanda

From personal experience I would think very long and hard about taking your family pet to Corfu.

The practice of poisoning stray dogs and cats with strategically placed poison impregnated meat is common place.

Unfortunately, this practice does not discriminate between loved and pampered family pet from England and stray from Corfu.

My sister has just lost her pedigree dog which she brought from England and her cat to this barbaric practice in one of the villages.

Please, there are hundreds of stray dogs and cats that would make great pets if only given the chance if you are thinking of living in Corfu.

I know this can be a problem in some villages but not all.The village near to me has dogs and cats around ( the same ones ) for years and never known any poisoning here. The local bar puts food out for the cats regulary.I bought 3 cats with me from England and they love it here and I would not have left them behind.Perhaps Amanda could make some enquires about the area she is going to in Corfu. It's hard to leave a member of the family behind but you want them to be safe,so I understand the concern.

Hi

Most of the hotels in the Accor Hotels chain seem to be dog friendly, but best to check via the various websites.

Hi amanda,

We often bring the dog to Corfu via Venice.  As previously mentioned most of the Ibis hotels take dogs. Try www.ibishotel.com or the Accor group hotels which includes Ibis via www.accorhotels.com. We have a springer spaniel size dog and no problem finding hotels taking dogs in France. Italy ok but occasionally told no dogs. Stayed at a Holiday inn in the Aosta valley and no problem. You might like to book via internet for your first night. Don't know when your going but in late June the French hotels were quite busy. Ibis will book your next night stop for you, if you know where your going to stay. Look out for their  little Ibis hotel directory books (free). We often use St Dizier about 240 miles from Boulogne. (late crossing). It's outside the main town with plenty of grass close by. The  hotel, reasonable standard and very pleasant restaurant. If your taking your dog on the ferry and using the doggy village, take a padlock (medium size) to secure the cage. They don't provide any locks on the boat. No problem in Kassiopi except  "some" of the local dogs are very Territorial and will not be very friendly to yours. Have a nice trip.

Tony

Hi All

Thanks everyone for their comments.    There is no way I could leave my little doggie behind when I come over and he's a complete lapdog anyway so its not like he's going to be straying around the village streets on his own, he never leaves my side, he's a tiny little thing that lvoes nothing more than cuddles and being carried everywhere so am not worried about him being poisoned or anything nasty like that as he would always either be on a lead with me or in my garden.

Thanks for the info about the ferry, was going to try and smuggle him into our cabin (as someone said this could be done if the dog is small) but failing that will make sure we bring a padlock so that he is secure.  Thanks for the info about Ibis hotels I have checked them out and they seem strategically placed along route so will make some reservations.

Although the house is going to be ready we are not going to travel in August as too hot and I know the ferries get jam packed with Italians amongst others so will leave it until September now.

Thanks everyone once again, will keep you update on how we get on.

:)

Does anyone know why the Corfiots are so antagonistic towards dogs?  I know they love cats, but to my knowledge, most Corfiots despise dogs, and I can't figure out why!  Is it a historical thing?  There must be a reason!

Any light anyone can shed on this subject would be much appreciated.

Not all Corfiots are antagonistic towards dogs ,some treat them as pets, as we do but they are generally looked on as a guard dog.The poisoning issue discussed earlier, where it does happen dogs and cats are both affected. After watching the news this morning I don't think the British look good after it's reported that there are more cruelty cases in the Uk than ever before.( and I'm British).

Goug:  Thanks for the info.  Maybe Corfiots look upon all domestic animals (dogs and cats) as having a function, rather than as just being part of the family, as we in the U.S. consider our pets to be.  Cats = rat catchers; dogs = guard dogs.  Is that it?  If so, it's probably due to the fact that only countries which have been prosperous for a great deal of time seem to get past the thinking that food and comfort are only for people, and that animals are put on earth merely to serve people.  Such a shame.  But that does seem to be the way of thinking, n'est-ce pas?  Am I on the right track here, vis-a-vis Corfiots and their thinking about animals in general?
