Hi All

I am looking for a bit of advice from all of you lucky Brits who are now residents on the beautiful island of Corfu.  We are due to move over lock, stock and barrel in the next couple of months and just wondered which of our electrical appliances are worth adding to the lock and stock and which are worth leaving here in the UK.

In other words, what works over there and what we will need to buy new in Corfu?

All advice appreciated.

Thanks, Manda & Ads

Hi

I wouldn't take the television with you because i doubt if it would work.  As for the other things fine as long as they are shipped carefully.  The reason i say this is because about 7 years ago i sent a microwave over with my daughter.  It went on the plane as baggage. Anyway, my son went to warm some food in it and got blown half way accross the room!!! The doctor came and checked him and thankfully he was okay. But since then i will not take anything electrical over, i would rather buy it there.  Also the price of electrical items are  now about the same as here in the UK if not slightly cheaper.

The TV issue can be a bit complicated.

As km says, your current TV will probably not pick up the local Greek channels as UK TVs are set for PAL transmissions, while Greek channels are transmitted on the SECAM system.  You might be lucky and have one that can receive both but you'll need to check first.

Of course, you would still be able to use the UK TV to watch your DVD/Video collection, or if you are planning to have satellite installed so, if you have the room, it might be worth packing them.

Also, don't forget that the European plugs are only rated at 10 amp so the meximum I have ever been able to buy anything in Corfu has been rated at 2,300 kw. I have been to several homes in Corfu where the owners keep saying 'rubbish electrics in Corfu, keep cutting out' when the problem is that they have brought UK electrical goods which are rated too high for Corfu. The answer is- If you already own the goods and you think they are still worth more than the cost of shipping then bring them. If you are thinking of buying and then shipping then I personally think you are mad.!!!!

If you connect a UK television set through a Greek video player it works perfectly. Don't ask me how, as I am not at all technically minded!

A UK TV will work with a converter PAL to SECAM apparetnly they are available from Maplin about £25 - we checked the net today for this as I ship my stuff out on in about 2 weeks.  Dont want to have to replace my Antony Worral Thompson juicer paid 109£ for it and various bits.

Mondial is £60 per cubic metre for shipping plus £6 handling per M3 and £15 each end for documents.  As Graham T-A said if you have them ship them.  This is what I will do.  Mainly because it is a trip and a half from Sidari to Corfu Town for all the bits you need - I hate shopping at the best of times so find this a hell of a lot less stressful.

Thanks very much for both those bits of information.

We have several TVs that we might want to take over and none of them are dual-reception, so the PAL-SECAM converter will definitely be worth investigating.

Also, the Mondial prices are useful to have - they'll come in handy for the budget planning etc.

HI All

Thanks so much for your useful information.  Thankfully, hubby has just informed me that our UK TV is able to receive both PAL and SECAM so it looks like we can bring that over.  Hubby being what he is was most worried about the TV situation (as you do!) so he is pretty happy about that info.

All very useful info and very much appreciated.

Cheers. :)
