Hi Ray don't know about the VW...And no the Carp is not from Corfu..Just wish it was Ray then she would never see me on holiday...

But you do need a licence to Fish from a boat in the sea..I know it not Carp fishing (as it looks like you do a bit of fresh water fishing as well) but it does me till i get home to our Carp lake.

Hello, can anybody help me. I'm working in Thessaloniki as a teacher in a frontistero - my girlfriend is living there. I want to import my car or at least keep it until the summer (now (jan 06) til september - 9 months).

1 question - I have read that you can keep the car for six months (provided you have tax etc.) BUT also that it is possible to pay a little after and keep the car for a futher 8 months. Is this possible?

2 question - my girlfriends father (as have many Greek nationals) imported a car from Germany. He only paid a small sum to register the car and change the plates. If I put the car in my girlfriends name (as a Greek national) and she then registered it and paid duty etc. and then sold it back to me. Would this be a solution to avoiding tonnes of paperwork and hassle?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Hi

My neighbours were thinking of importing a car from Germany, it sounded really simple.  Could it be anything to do with where it is coming from ie easier from Germany than the UK, rather than who is doing it?  Do Germans resident in Greece have the same problem if they want to bring their car over?  It might be that in buying a new car from Germany the first registration will be as a Greek car so all the hassle doesn't apply.

As you can see I can't help much.  I certainly don't know anything about extending the six months.

The only thing I can say is be careful.  If you "sell" your girlfriend the car and then split up, (sorry not implying anything, these things happen) will you get your car back?

Hi Rolandscriven

You used to be able to extend the period of 6 months for a further 3 months only by going to police station.

Be prepared to lose your car if you try any 'tricks'. The Greek regulations r.e. foreign car matters are open to interpretation by the authorities, EU directives mean little. Your girlfriend would, I believe, have to have owned the car (if secondhand) for a period of time before she could re-register it, having re-registered it in her name, if you were caught driving it, the car could be confiscated etc. etc. If you are able to keep UK tax and MOT on the car they  (the authorities) are less likely to take it. Why not obtain Residency and buy a Greek car then sell on when not needed any more? Sorry just read that you are working and therefore if you have residency as well as work permit then if you are caught driving a non-Greek car (and don't have the right friends), then you will lose it.

Good eh.......

Thanks for all your replies. Now I think I'll bring the car just over for the summer. I mean this should be alright. I'll just say I'm a tourist. Thanks for the info Ian, if I say I work etc. then I'm screwed. Its useful to know that.

I thought about buying a car in Greece but for what I paid for mine I'll have to drive something extremely **********. The price of second hand cars seems to be at least twice as expensive in Greece.
