Hi Rosy ,

You can take the car for six months only at one time without resgistering it .

After six months you can take the ferry to Brindisi and then come back to start another period .

John

Unless the law has changed recently, I'm afraid it isn't quite as easy as that.

It is true that you can keep the car in Greece for an initial six-month period but then you are supposed to take it out of the country for six months before bringing it back in again - if it stays registered to the same person.

We managed to avoid this because we used to go to Brindisi at the end of the period, transfer ownership between us and then re-import the car on the next ferry.  Then the second named person could have the car for the next period.

As I said, the law may have changed since then but, if so, it would make the six-month rule quite meaningless really and no-one would bother to pay the high price to register their cars when the alternative would be a cheap return ticket for a mini-cruise to Italy.

Hi All , You guys obviously know the score .

The one thing my post did then was to bring out the real facts and pitfalls , which is a result for Rosy .

I find some queries unanswered on the site , if someone makes a vague uneducated reply it brings out the interest and positive replies from people that know .

If I wriggle long enough................

Bear in mind that you cannot obtain insurance on your car in Greece with a Greek company,

Also if you have UK insurance for the period you are in Greece, it becomes invalid when either MOT and or UK road fund licence expire.

Bob.

I followed the information from the corfiot and obtained a document from the Greek Embassy in London to help import the car.I thought I was sorted so I went to an import agent to set wheels in motion. My first visit to the registration office to obtain another form resulted in them asking me for an EEC approval certificate,I did not have one and trying to obtain one has proved to be an impossible task as the vehicle is over 6 years old.I did ask why they required it as the car was already in the EEC previously and must meet with the requirments.the reply "Greek System".

I do know of people who have imported their cars into Corfu after a lot of running around but personally I would buy a car here in Corfu and save the nightmare.

Anyone want to buy a Mazda 323 left hand drive registered in the UK?

Doug

I've been told by both local customs - I live in Lesvos - and the Greek Embassy in London that the laws are changing "next year" and the import tax will be reduced dramatically in line with other EU countries. they could not tell us anything more precide than that.

Has anyone else heard this? If I knew the date when this was going to happen I would allow them to impound my car (I have a nearly new renault Scenic) for a few months and hire one in the meantime. This would be cheaper than selling it and losing £thousands.

Is there anyone who has actually brought a car with them from the UK and reregistered it with Greek plates.  If so could they possibly contact us as we have had the run-around from customs, different info. from various other Greek establishments and it would be nice to have the actual facts and costs.

Graham and myself do know of a couple who live near us who have actually imported a car from the UK into Greece and are at present in the process of importing another one. They do not use the message boards so unlikely to see ure post.

However i beleive u know them - if you would like further details send myself or Graham a PM.
