Is there anyone who has actually brought a car with them from the UK and reregistered it with Greek plates.  If so could they possibly contact us as we have had the run-around from customs, different info. from various other Greek establishments and it would be nice to have the actual facts and costs.

Hi Susanna ,

I think you are taking on a very difficult task in trying to import a vehicle .

It should be easy as they are EU , but it is not the case [ this is Greece ]

If you have the option to buy out there then that is going to be the easier , less stressful path . You will need a tax number though .

Hi Susanna, dont know the actual facts..But two friends of ours who live in Corfu had to bring their 4x4 and a motorbike back in January to the UK and sell them as it would have cost them about £14.000 to reregistered them in Corfu

Thanks everyone,  This is what we know, but are trying to get hold of someone who has actually managed to do it.  We've heard all the failures and the reasons why not to, but just wondered if anyone had fought their way through the regulations.

We're actually asking generally on behalf of various clients, John.

The "Greece Is Home" site has what seem to be fairly comprehensive details for importing cars to Greece - I don't think it is Corfu-specific but it might give you some good leads: http://www.greeceishome.gr/kb/kb.asp?fIndex=27

Hi Susanna, I am starting to get a little concerned too, we had intended to drive over to Corfu, once we have put all our home contents into storage, to start our new life in Corfu, but now I wonder if it is just going to be too expensive to register our car there, its not a very new car but would have given us the initial independence we need to start our search for a house, but I am now wondering whether to just sell the car before we move and then hire when we get over to Corfu.

The alternative I suppose is to drive there and do all the things we need to. Can anyone remind me how long the car can be in the country before it needs to be registered with greek plates? I suppose if the gap were long enough then it might be worth then bring the car back to UK, sell it and fly back again, and buy a car once we have registered as residents.

Hi Rosy ,

You can take the car for six months only at one time without resgistering it .

After six months you can take the ferry to Brindisi and then come back to start another period .

Thanks for the reply, that idea sounds much better, do you have to stay out of the country for long or can we make it a weekend away and come back straight away?

Hi folks

Unfortunately the Greek authorities have long been wise to this but until recently turned a blind eye.

However they are now looking more closely in this area and there is now a small but real risk of having your vehicle impounded on your return to Corfu if you have flouted the law.

So it depends on whether you value your car too much to risk it.
