Sorry not sure is we have spelt that correctly but slightly rushed.

Just wondering if anyone has any general knowledge on being an Electrician, the sort of pay and how hard work is out there. Also is there steady work??

We're very confused about our options at the moment and just wondered does anyone think it would be realistic to begin a business or find work in this trade.

There is a good need here for electricians who are reliable (come on time if you make an appointment). Pay is around 30-40 euro's an hour I would reckon.

I was told last year that good tradesmen in Corfu earn around €100 a day

I work as an electrician in this country, it's hard work, no it's hard graft, I hate working in the summer here, I don't think I would like to work in a hot country one bit.

Don't forget that the majority of jobs in Corfu are taken by local men, Spiros the taverna owner will be a plumber or electrician in the winter, you will be competing against locals and taking their jobs.

Obviously there are a few who make a living out of it, getting a steady supply of work is very difficult over here, expect it to be harder over there, especially being an outsider.

The hardest part will be getting your foot in the door so to speak.

You would be better off going back to the Uk for a month here and there earning £200 per day saving hard and spending most of your time in Corfu.

3 months graft 9 months leisure..not bad.

Steve you can possibly answer this better than me but wouldn't a tradesman in Greece be required to be qualified in Greek electrical regs etc?

Haven't got the foggiest Mike.

I should think so, we have just introduced Part P to stop the cowboys, ask the boss, he should know.

thanks everyone but  were confused as to how to begin?? do they recognise British qualificarions over there because they may be of better standards than greek? would they recognise NVQ's.

Are there any major recognisable electrical companies over there? and would it be easier to just join one of those??on the same rate of pay??

Also would the Greek language be completely compulary or just smatterings of greek and obviously English.

Nvq's?

Waste of time, you need city and guilds minimum, also part P if you intend to work on domestic installations.

That's correct Jedi and so would an English electrician. The standards if anything are higher than in the UK due to the stricker laws. Wiring is totally different in Greece and ring mains are illegal. If wired incorrectly and a fire starts then the electrician and the house owner will almost certainly be looking at a jail sentance even if no-one is hurt.

It's hard work and as Steve says, extremely difficult in the heat. Electricians seem to earn around 60/80 E a day depending on the area you work in and work really hard. This is considered a good wage as labourers earn about half that.
