I was in Corfu town in May and was buying a stereo from a big store, i noticed a petshop across the road and thought i would pop in and see what they have. I came out in tears, just not used to seeing puppies in pet shops, I wanted to buy them all and i am a cat person.....
I can remember when the sight of caged puppies and kittens were quite common in UK pet shops - and not that long ago either.
I was brought up in Croydon and there were a couple of local pet shops who had sections of their front windows divided off into seperate pens so they could show off their "wares" to passing trade. There would always seem to be a few young kids standing outside with their noses pressed to the glass, with some of them taking great delight in teasing/frightening the young animals inside.
Given the fact that we are supposed to be such great animal lovers, it is strange to remember that most people took this for granted. Mind you, there must have been some complaints, otherwise the shops wouldn't have stopped this practice. It hasn't ended completely though. I can think of a few shops that are displaying caged rabbits and birds in a similar way (but this time inside the shop, not as part of a window display).
