The children are taught to stand in the doorway, or if that is not possible (ie too many under it already!) get under the desk.
Standing outside is not always a good idea, if you are in a narrow street with old houses you are likely to get showered with chunks of brick and cement , or roof tiles!
I was teaching in a school in Corfu town a few years ago, on the fourth floor. I was conducting a listening test when two of the children scrambled under the desk. They had felt the first tremor starting.
They explained what was happening and I could feel the floor swaying and the light was swinging from side to side. It was a long tremor, and the children in the nursery classes were all screaming.
NO one was hurt, but they were so upset we had to calm them all down by showing The Lion King video and giving them all ice cream! The quake measured around 5.4 but we really felt it at the top of the building.
The headmistress commended me on how calm I was, but I was just stunned, and absolutely clueless about what I should do!
I have felt many tremors here since, but by the time you notice them they are usually finishing!

This is all very interesting, my ma was in the r.t.s. and always told me a door way and under stairs was a safe place to be, other than that get a matteress over you to protect debris falling and if possible put your knees or something up to create an air barrier. But we have to face the fact they happen and happen fast at anytime, panic in any situation causes more casualties than the situation itself, so deep breath, brain in gear and a quick pray will probably help! It is just one of those things we have to come to terms with if we chose to holiday or live on a fault line. Having said that I hope I have experienced that once in a lifetime things folk talk about.
