Unfortunately due to a new business venture I will be unable to take a holiday until the last week in August and first week of September next year (2006), this at the earliest, I would suspect that mid September is more realistic. Been to Zante 3 times, Crete twice, Rhodes, Santorini and Skiathos once yet always considered Kefalonia but never booked it. Can anyone help on thge following:
1. Weather conditions and temperatures in mid to late September
2. A recommendation for a resort with a sandy beach, relatively quiet at nights with bars and tavernas but no thump thump music played
3. A recommendation for a Hotel, Apartment or Studios for 3 adults

Weather mid September is warm but changeable. Yesterday it was scorching hot and warm sea swimming. Today cloudy, raining but still warmish sea for a swim. Are you looking for a package holiday with flights or for a recommendation for accommodation which you book direct? If you want to book flights as well, which airport are you coming from? All information is helpful as there is a lot of accommodation tied up with specific tour operators. If you want sandy beaches - the south of the island is best and as the south coast is from Lassi in the west to Poros on the east - you could look at the home page on www.kefalonia-travel-guide.com for beaches for more information of that section of the island.

I visited Kef several times, great place - more traditonal than Zante, the beaches on the south coast are the sandy ones. Lassi has 3 and lots of varied accommodation although I checked a website Hotel Reviews - Holidays undercover to see what people have said about places where we've stayed and some of the reports were awful - really depends what you are used to in Greece and what your needs are. I think the accom in Kef is smaller but then Zante, etc are probably bit more commercialised. There are lots of nice tavernas in Lassi, no loud music (traditional, yes!) or clubs and close by is Argostoli. There are some lovely small, uncrowded beaches around this area if you hire a car or get a taxi. My friend has been to Kef 5 times & Skiathosx3, says you will like Kef if you liked Skiathos. Mostly older couples (well not18-30 brigade) & families go to Kef.
I've found this site very informative and the guides are good on the left hand side.

Thanks for the response. Intent will be to opt for a package deal, probably out of Bristol. Aim at the moment is to identify via recommendation a resort with a sandy beach, good bars and tavernas and little of that bloody horrible Dance music beating out at 20 million decibels! Other recommendations I am after are reasonable Hotels, Apartments, Studios, join the info together and book.
With regards the weather I am after the average for mid September. I recall going to Zante 28th of September in 2000 and having 6 or so days of rain, locals claiming the adverse weather was a one off!
In the ideal, I want a nice quiet and quaint resort, decent beach but no 18 - 30s types, sounds horrible I know!
Thanks so far, I can now at least target the South of the island as an option.

Like I said before places we liked, others don't. We stayed at Lorenzo Hotel (Lassi) in their apartments,2 years ago, 2 years running - yes they were small but adequate, our children were smaller then!, they had aircon and we used to ring them before we went - really friendly staff- and request a sea view(We don't really spend alot of time in our accom anyway) they are about 50 yards from a small sandy beach. They also own San Lorenzo Village - looks nice in the brochures, bit further to walk to amenities though. But when i looked at reviews they sounded awful, trouble is if people haven't been to Greece before they don't know what to expect. A bit further near the airport (don't let that put you off) theres some lovely quiet sandy beaches, think the place is called Sovrinata (?) i know some brochures have places here but theres ltd nite life. The beach at Avitos is lovely, I noticed on this site there is a beach guide, its worth reading. Hope you find something that suits you!

Dear Bob B. I agree with Blue chairs - people who like Skiathos always seem to like Kefalonia. If you are booking package from BRISTOL your choice is narrowed down to Kosmar and Olympic. Between them they offer resorts of Svoronata (as mentioned above) Katelios, Lourdas and Lassi and Skala. As you like quaint and traditional then Katelios may well suit. Svoronata is a rural retreat with a small village, some other tavernas and mini markets dotted along the lane and a choice of beaches. If you hire a car you are into Lassi in 10 minutes for greater choice of bars and tavernas. Decibels in Svoronata? None - just Goat-bells!! Helena Studios are not brand new but are adequate for 3 persons and have a pool and make a good base and I think you will find the package holiday reasonably priced. If you fancy LOURDAS on the beach Kosmar have the Lourdas Beach Studios which sleep 3 and the Villa Mare Studios where they have one big enough to sleep 3. Both these accoms are almost on the beach and there are some nice tavernas nearby (I like Klimatis taverna - very traditional Greek food). No Loud music. In Lourdas you can walk up the very steep hill for more tavernas and bars (car hire recommended as the whole resort is on a steep hill). Up the hill you will find ELENI STUDIOS with a large swimming pool. Katelios is a little fishing village and has a sand and shingle beach. I am not familiar with the accom they are offering at that resort. Lassi. As I sit here in Lassi I have to say I can hear the thump thump of music - it's Zorbas Greek Night and they are playing loud Greek music and people are screaming with laughter and dancing out on the street - but it dies down by 12. Accom in Lassi near the Lorenzo hotel mentioned above is EVANS STUDIOS sleep 3. You may hear music at these studios as they are near a restaurant which has live music a couple of times a week and that tends to carry accross the resort (Aqua Marina Restaurant) Fairly standard studios but they are OK for 3 persons and in a GREAT position because they are not on the Lassi strip but set back. They are very near the beach Paleo Stafida which they call Peaceful Beach, and you can wander along the back lanes of Lassi to the Malibu Bar and use the pool there, or carry on to the beach at Makris Yialos. Evans gets high points for Lassi position. Up the hill you will find LIberatos Studios which means a bit of a hike if you are going up there from the beach and I would recommend a car (newer accom with pool) and there is the Bella Vista - also up hill which has some double bedded apartments which take 3rd and 4th person (again, car would be nice considering the hilly return!). I am not very good on Skala accom and hope somebody else will help out.
If you want to considerably widen your choice of accommodation then you should book flights only and contact the ACCOMMODATION FINDER SERVICE on this website - where you can be directed to accommodation that is not tied into tour operator contracts and operates direct. Travelling from Bristol narrows your choice a bit but I think you will get best value if you book a package holiday with one of those companies rather than doing separate flights and then paying around 60 euro per night for accommodation on top.

Thanks again for the information, it really is useful and is more than enough to allow me to make a choice based on the experience of others as opposed to the less then accurate comments provided in the brochures!
The noise of Greek music, goat bells or even church bells would not put me off as these all add to the originallity and quaintness, its the Fun Boy Slim and Red Eyed Peas type music that seems to be banged out that irritates.
The option of flying out of Bristol is based on the fact that I live in Wiltshire and its 40 minutes away as opposed to the Gatwick 2.5 hours. I have the KOSMAR brochure and will try the OLYMPIC.
Thanks again, you and the board have been a great help.
