Roseanne I think the thing you could do that would speed your machine most, apart from making sure that you hav'nt got spyware lurking, would be to increase your memory. 256 these days is very much too small.
Also, dl a free registy cleanup tool. Your registry is bound to be full of unneccessary junk! Isn't windows wonderful!
Make sure you back up the registry before you do anything, however, or you may as well reinstall everthing from scratch and get a clean start.

Now I have seen your report I suspect part of your problem is not enough memory. All the Windows XP system files and background processes (including AV software) use enormous amounts of memory BEFORE you start actually doing things. Close down any programmes you are working on and hold down CTRL...ALT...DELETE  then click on Processes.  Now look at Mem Usage to see what I mean !!

With modern software 256 MB is not enough to do much on your computer..and if you multitask ???.  Extra memory is relatively cheap at present and if you use your computer for digital photos , music, games etc  then get as much fitted as you can afford.

First I suggest running an online Virus scan from www.kaspersky.co.uk which will report on any bad files which have hidden themselves from other AV software which you run from your computer ( a common trick of viruses). It only tests but you can print out the report and then take advice on sorting out any problems.  Then go for more memory.

I agree entirely. Windows XP recommends more than 256mb memory. In addition to the above, your HD is quite small for what you are using it for, 20Gb, when most are in excess of 80Gb and upwards.

I was getting very similar problems Roseanne, a few months ago. With some help, I decided to have a PC made for me to my specifications. 160GB HD, 1Mb RAM, top notch graphics, audio, video cards, and much more. Made to measure so to speak, and it cost £400. If your happy with your screen, keyboards, printers etc, all you need is a PC.

Just a thought Roseanne.

Yammas, Chris.

I think the Kaspersky web-site gives you the opportunity of sending the report and asking for advice.

If not, a very helpful place to go is the Forum on Castle Cops where you can ask advice and probably be invited to submit your results so they can be scrutinised. http://www.castlecops.com/f66-Virus_Prevention.html

The Kaspersky test is quite severe and possibly picks up files that other companies do not class as real viruses ...possibly the same with infected files..so don't worry unduly. Many of those files you will just be able to delete but check first in case they are important system files.

Some new viruses get into your computer past out-of-date AV software and then change that software to not recognise it even after you update it. So occasionally an online scan is recommended.

The report  probably gives you the opportunity to click on the name of  each virus name and read more about it. If not type the names of the 6 viruses (one at a time) into Google and you should then be able to find some details on any AV company's website (they usually call them different names )

If they are genuine viruses and you have done any backups onto CDs etc then make sure you scan them all.

Isn’t IT great what we can learn from one another? I’m a great believe in this when learning how to do things on a computer’’ I am your willing student…lol

I am going to delete all quarantine files on my Anti software (which doesn’t amount to the bad files Kaspersky look for)… Then I’ll use Kaspersky to scan again,,,just in case its picking some of these infected, files up from there…

..This might be what’s causing the problem.

But as you all said the memory or to upgrade this computer needs to be done…

Let see if, it hits back with the same amount……god I hope not…

Ad-Aware

AVG

Spy sweeper

Zone alarm I’ve deleted. it started to cause some problems…I’ll reinstall it later. And try again with it…

Secretmaker…

Firewalls

I feel as if I’ll on the right track..so that’s good..
