Hi Roseanne

For spyware  the software that is recommended on many sites is Adaware (free)  which I scan with every week or so.

The Anti Virus programme I have used for a few years is Norton (Symantec). For the last 4 years I have used Norton Internet Security (combined Anti-virus and Firewall).

However I have become very fed up with the Support aspect when you have a problem or a query (you just are not meant to contact them, even if with an installation problem) and from that aspect I cannot recommend the Company.  Like you I am just in the process of renewing and am giving AVG a trial (not the free version). So far I am undecided but have found their Support by email a great help when I had a problem (my fault).

Some years ago I used McAfee which caused me problems and their support response caused me to dump it.

The trouble with any of them is that you cannot test how good they are until they actually meet a virus. On that aspect Norton worked very well for me and stopped quite a few including one bad virus from a web-site on the day it was "discovered". Although it was not in the Virus List Norton recognised the activity and stopped it instantly.

One of the best Firewalls (according to the specialist Forums) is Zonealarm (free download) from Zonelabs, who are now producing an Anti Virus programme as well.

I don't know if it's because my computer, is in use  all the time... or because, this is an old pc , I've fixed up...because I much prefer to use my labtop.than a Pc...anyway...the system in the PC starts slowing down then i scan for infection and spyware....there's usually problems on it...like you just can tell...

None of my computer protection jumps up to say infection..i normally can tell with the slowing down of the system that something is up

the firewall I have is zone alarm

I have just installed Adware...fro some reason it stop running...

I have Norton thats coming to an end...

for my spy ware I have spy sweeper its not very good..I used to have Spy doctor and it work brilliantly on my pc...but was unable to find a trail or free version...so im starting to run out...I think

Hi Roseanne,

I agree with Dennis in all he says above. I have tried Norton, which was OK, but as described above, the support was not good. I also found with Norton, if you were to have other AVs or FWs, they use to fight each other causing many problems to ones system.

I have used AVG, but in my case only the free edition as a trial. Personally I did not rate it much, and in some cases was quite slow in what it was meant to do.

I am using Zonelab now, and have had no problems with the Firewall to date. It spots everything coming in and throws up a warning for you to personally allow it through or not. Anitvirus, I am still on AVG at present, but waiting for the Zonelab Antivirus to give it a trial.

There are many AVs and FWs around, some free, some not. It is really down to you and your system to ascertain which will be the best for you.

Yammas, Chris.

Hi.  Please may i suggest that when changing to another int security system. make sure your windows or any other firewalls are turned Off, also check to see if there are any temp files associated with any previous security system, and delete them. Before down loading or installing a new security system, this has this as been a problem for me in the past, using the info above seems to have worked for me, "touch wood". I now use PC Gard which is a complete security system which is free at the moment for Blueyonder customers.  Hope this helps.

Davyboy.
