Hi,

According to this site the Corfu roads don't mix well with mopeds. But how bad is it?

I'm not that interesed in renting a car but would still like to be mobile enough to go where I wan't, when I wan't. What alternatives are there?

(I'll be staying at a hotel in AG. It's been quite a while since I last used a moped, but back then I had no problem with off-road driving.)

Cheers,
Hans

Hi Hans

Its not a case of them not mixing, most of the main roads are fine. Its a case of being careful and wearing the correct clothing and helmet. Yvonne67 and Jan Holland two of our members hire a scooters,  I am sure they will be able to give you more information.

Commonsense prevails in the hiring of mopeds, scooters and quadbikes. As Caroline stated the main roads are usually suitable for this type of mobilisation, but if one is issued with the appropriate safety equipment, then by law it must be worn. We cannot reiterate this enough, in particular to the younger hirers.

The majority of the country roads, around some of the coasts, and moreso in land are, and can be quite treacherous, in particular the virgin roads, some resembling dirt tracks with potholes, cracks, etc, and of course other traffic, some of which do not care for other road users.

Drive carefully, wear the gear, and be aware of others.

Best Wishes.

we rent a scooter every year we come to corfu and nothing bad has happened untill now (and lets hope nothing will in the future). A few things you have to take notice of:

- be carefull where you hire

- be carefull what you hire (for example: if there are a lot of scratches and so on the scooter, they might blame you for it afterwards but it is also a sign that something has happened with the vehicle)

- WEAR A HELMET and be carefull what you wearing when you're driving (dont just wear shorts, wear at least a t-shirt and maybe the trousers with the zippers so you can detach the ....... (sorry dont know the word) of the trousers.

- be carefull of sudden holes, animals and orther traffic on the road, and the little stones at the side of the road.

- use your commen sense, if you feel insecure, dont drive at all

Hope you have a good time in AG, we just love it there!

Yvonne and Henk

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll have to wait with making up my mind about what to do until I can judge the roads and traffic my self, but it doesn't sound that bad.

From the sound of it,  the other traffic might be the bigger concern.

Do a lot of the locals use Scooters/Mopeds as well or is it only something tourists use?

/Hans

I think it would be a very good idea to take a look at the roads, maybe by being very cautious on the first day or two of hiring.

There seems to be quite a few of the residents of Corfu who use mopeds and scooters, but please do not copy them, they are use to the roads, in most cases.

Best Wishes.

For the sake of completness, came back from Corfu last night, haven't really got back to the reality of everyday life yet, anyway.

I did rent a Scooter (40cc) at Space Bikes (also recommended by my travel agent) for 4 days. I can't say that the roads were that bad, yes there are a lot of holes and other stuff in the road, but with carefull driving and a little practice it's no problem. After about 2 days of carefull driving I had no problems reading the roads and traffic and was comfortable with the handling of the Scooter.

One key note here would be to not drive any faster than you feel you can handle at any given situation, it's not the others driving by you that is doing your driving, if they wan't to drive insanely fast, that's there decition.

What was more of an issue for me was the steep down hills, since this reqired a lot of effort using the brakes and since the Scooter had auto gear shifting it was not possible to engine break. This was a bit tiresome since you had to work the breaks all the time.

I would also not even consider driving without a crash helmet. Several tourists were driving with there helmets strapped to the bike, that's just stupid! And I also have to say that Scooter is THE way to get around on the island, very practical.

Cheers,
Hans
(...now I only have 641 photos to go through.)

Generally roads are good.

Ofcourse renting a car will be safer for you.

Once again, I would like to recommend: www.rolandos-cars.com
