I came across a new operator to Paxos called Spirit of Greece. It looks like they've got some good accommodation and I like the way they seem to be a hybrid between a package operator and a "do it yourself" job.

has any one heard of them or indeed booked with them? Their web site is http://www.spiritofgreece.co.uk

I think that's a new one on me.

I recognised their Tonia cottage from this year's Sunvil brochure and compared the prices.  2 weeks in peak season with Spirit of Greece is £464 p.p. for accommodation only next year.   The highest price for 2 weeks with Sunvil this year was £660 p.p., so that leaves just under £200 for the flight and transfer.

Don't know if that's typical of their prices but, even allowing for inflation for 2005 prices, I think I'd sooner save myself the hassle of having to organise the transport and getting the timing right to catch the ferry, for the sake of the difference.

They do say that they are flexible on arrival and departure days, which sounds good.  But with the majority of flights from the UK to Corfu being on Mondays, I think it might be a different story if you tried to actually book for a different day, unless you booked very early.

Thanks Elaine, Ive been looking at their larger villas with pools and their villas Angouletta and Danai compare well with, say Travel A La Cartes Villa Paradisos which is in the same area and size. On the dates I looked at (6 June 2005 for two weeks) Spirit of Greece were £406 per person based on 4 people plus £189 for flights and £48 for transfers = £643. The package with Travel al a Carte looks to be £759. Thats a saving of £116 per person or £464 in total. I think I'll book it!

With a saving like that, I think I would too!  Please come back and let us know how it went - I'm always looking for new options to cater for my annual Paxos fix!

I have actually been to Paxos with Spirit of Greece, and stayed a the Villa Danai.  It was fantastic, and as all the transfers were organised by them there was no hassle at all with Ferry times etc.  There was a real personal touch, I thought- it felt quite nice not to feel 'herded'!  Incidentally, I was so impressed by them that I went to Halki a few months later.  The villa was amazing, and Spirit of Greece organised a private water taxi for us which took us to to the villas own private jetty!!

That's great to hear Fruit Puff (nice name btw) as I've booked the Danai for next July. It sounds great - Spirit of Greece told me to take a torch as the   walk back from Loggos is an unlit stony path. What's the walk like? - will I be able to manage after a few Metaxas...?

On the understanding that Metaxa is the same all over Greece, after a few, you'll feel no pain!

Bob.

Hi

I have not stayed in any properties on Paxos, so cannot comment there, but have visited both villages by yacht.

Gaios is the capital as can be busy and has plenty of bars, restaurants and so on.  The town doesn't have a "sea view" as such as there is a small island in the way - the water between the two forms the harbour - it looks like a large river.  Consequently, there are no beaches close to the town centre, but there are once you get outside the harbour area.

Loggos is tiny fishing village, just to the north of Gaios and has a couple of tavernas and is very pretty (despite the old soap factory on the northern side of the bay - just as well it's there as it helps us yachties find the place from the sea!).  The pace is much quieter than Gaios.  The water inside the small harbour is relatively shallow, which means that it is not a mecca for visiting yachts - so most tie up outside the harbour wall, but there isn't much space.  This, again helps to restrict the numbers, particularly overnight as there is little shelter for the yachts in the event of a blow.

Other places to consider are Lakka (on the north coast) which is a larger village, but smaller than Gaios with a good number of bars, restaurants and shops - it's just that bit quiter than Gaios, but it is another good anchorage for yachts, so it gets busy in the hight of summer.  Fortunately for non-yachting types, the town quay is quite small, so by and large, visting yachts are forced to anchor in the bay.

In both Gaios and Lakka, the closer to the waterfront you are, the more expensive the prices in the bars and tavernas (and Paxos tends to be a bit more expensive than Corfu anyway) - but there's plenty of choice, so look around.

Another quiet spot is Mogonissi, which is a totally enclosed bay on the south of the island - there is one, fairly narrow, entrance channel for yachts - and as it is so sheltered it provides an excellent bolt hole in bad weather.  However, it's not as scenic as the other places mentioned and has the disadvantage of having only one taverna - that said, we have had some excellent evenings there with Greek dancing etc.

Hope some of these ramblings help.

Martyn
