Hi Jane, I've just got back from Avlaki. We didn't stay at the Bella Mare but we were in a villa very close to it (owned by the owners of Bella Mare).
It looks like a nice hotel, quiet and ideal for children. We saw several children around the hotel pool (which is just a few paces from the beach). I understand that there is only a breakfast room at the hotel (I believe it's actually self catering apartments/rooms there) and there is also a small pool bar which was open throughout the day and closed around 8pm. There are two tavernas within easy walking distance (both less than 5 minutes walk) from the hotel. The Bella Mare pool is a good size and was never busy when we were there (plenty of sunbeds and parasols available).
Avlaki beach was very quiet when we were there last week although there were more people around at the weekend. The sunbeds (for hire for 3 euro each) are spread out as the beach is so big so there is plenty of room. On one day I counted 5 people on the beach! You can hire boats from the beach for between 50 and 80 euros (excluding fuel which was 12 euros) for the day.
The nearest supermarkets are up in the village itself which was just under 1km from the beach. It's possible to walk (but it's uphill on the way there!) but we found it a bit hot for that so relied on the car. Kassiopi is very close by and well worth a visit.
Hope this helps!
Jules

We stayed in the villa behind the hotel, and another just up the road, it was in October and very quiet, we thought the hotel was very nice and would have been happy to have been staying there ourselves. I would have thought absolutely ideal for young children, the tavernas on the side of the road were all very good too, relax you will love it. Just a 5 min car drive from the busier Kassiopi. Gets windy in the afternoon, very welcoming on a hot day.
