Hiya

Belinda here (I promise not to mention the Sidari Donkey)

I congratulate you on your work with the animals.  When we visit in June we will come and bring some stuff for the animals.

When we finally get to live in Corfu (not saying if any more).  You can count on my support and Phils's as volunteers.

Looking forward to meeting you.  Yammas

There are so many puppies on the island at the moment it is all so sad and very difficult. The dog rescue center is full to overflowing. Everyone we know seems to be fosterng puppies (we have two ourselfs, only wish they where housetrained). As much as we love the Greek people many of them don't like or can't afford to neuter ther dogs so there is a massive increase in the dog population at this time of year. They don't believe in neutering but they are quite happy to put a puppy in a polythene bag and dump it with the rubbish. Most Greek people are more concerned than this for the puppies so dump them on an English family as they know we can't see any harm come to them.

If only we could get them back to UK. The ones we have would get a home tomorrow.

Have you tried contacting the Greek Animal Rescue people here in the UK?

We adopted a couple of rescue dogs from them last year and they regularly transport dogs and puppies out to Germany and UK.  They might be able to help.  Their contact details are on their website: Greek Animal Rescue

Good luck

Stuart

Hi Stuart

Some of the dogs have occasionally been sent to the UK.  The problem is that they have to be cared for for 6 months on the island before they can leave.  That means either getting enough fosterers to do this or having more room in the rescue centre that is operating.  Also costs are so much higher for transport to the UK.

Basically, it is a question of money.  Still there is no harm in making some enquiries.  Thanks for the link.  I like to introduce us to other charities anyway as their advice alone can be invaluable and you never know what a bit of mutual support can achieve!

Belinda,

Thank you for your kindness, we will look forward to meeting you too!

Julia

Hi Shygirl

The trouble is, on Corfu, visiting vets need prior permission by the vetinary association.  They worry that it will not only be strays that are treated and that they will lose their income because of these visits.  Foreign vet visits do sometimes occur, but the arrangements require a lot of tact and diplomacy, not to mention the bureauocracy (sorry I always spell that wrong) involved and consequently the whole thing can be a bit of a minefield.

What I would really like is to have the AAWF generate enough money that it could afford to pay a Greek vet for a day or two a month to perform operations/vaccinations/microchipping services etc for strays and the pets of those who simply cannot afford this kind of thing themselves.  We can but dream!

In the meantime we do what we can and are greatful for all the support, financial or otherwise, that we have received.

Julia

Have you tried contacting the tour companies and/or airlines to see if they would like to offer some sort of sponsorship?  It needn't be a money donation (though that would be nice too) but they might be able to publicize the organisation in some way - perhaps a small mention in the brochure or at the welcome meetings etc.

Also, maybe the airport managers might let you put collecting boxes near the check-ins for any odd change that the departing guests have left?

Hi Stuart

I agree that is a great idea.    It is now on my list of things-to-do-that-might-help!

I had contacted one tourist organisation who gave funding for local projects in holiday resorts but we didn't really fit the bill.  I may try the GNTO as well.
