Sorry Bruce it's old technology (so I thought you'd understand). On a typewriter there is a long bar sticking out from the carriage (the roller) and when doing some typing you would get to the right end of the paper and need to go down onto the next line. By pulling this leaver across to the left it automatically went down one line and the operation was called a 'carriage return'
In Computer speak - to accomplish this return to the left side of the screen and going down one line you press your 'Enter key'
