One thing that catches out many drivers on Corfu is the state of the roads during and after rain, especially following the long dry summer spells.

When I lived in Nissaki, you could guarantee to see a whole spate of (usually) minor collisions as the roads turned into skid pans with the mixture of olive oil and water.  It can be worse than black ice!

Most tourists remain blissfully unaware of this until they apply the brakes.  So take care at all times, but especially in the wet!

Over the past few years we have been to various destinations and hired a car.  My husband drives a car a lot with his job and a few years ago when he was a policeman he passed his police advanced driving test.  He is always a bit nervous until we have cleared through the town traffic (wherever we go) – I try and keep him calm, read the map and remind him to drive on the right.  We have hired a car six times when we have stayed in n.e. Corfu.  I get the good bit – I sit in the passenger seat and gasp t the views.  We only use the car to go out for meals or shopping but he gets stressed to varying degrees every time we go out.  My daughter aged 26 came with us last year and she wouldn’t  drive at all!  The most important thing about a holiday is to enjoy it and if that means playing safe then so be it.  It doesn’t mean you’re being a wimp if you want to be safe!  For somebody who hasn’t had much experience of driving, having the controls on the ‘wrong’ side combined with steep, narrow roads doesn’t make for a safe and relaxing holiday.

Hi Sparkle

If your wanting your son to do some driving while in Corfu then check the age limit on driving thats been mentioned on here as Corfu have different laws to us.

I must also point out that your son will need to take his driving licence and show it to the hire company where your getting the car from as they need to know who is driving there cars.

You will also need to check your Holiday Insurance as to whether car accidents are covered by the company.(Not that am saying your going to be involved in a accident, just to be on the safe side ok).

A Hint While Driving:

If your out on a hot day and your about to go up a steep hill, like coming up the hill from Taverna Agni, then make sure you turn off your air conditioning as this really slows you down and you may not get up the hill if you don't turn it off.

If You Are Hiring Scooters:

Please be aware of Pot Holes in the roads while driving around as these can cause an accident or an injury to yourself.Be on the lookout.

Hope this Helps.
