I always research any Greek island I've visited on the net and via books prior to travelling there but this has been by far any away the most informative and abundant site. It would be great to have similar sites for all the hundreds of other Greek islands. I've travelled extensively around several others so if anyone out there would like a break from Corfu (sounds though it will be difficult) and would like an opinion on Zante, Skiathos, Skopelos, Samos, Rhodes, Symi, Patmos, Santorini (my picture) or Crete then please feel free to reply.

Hi Al

Out of your list only been to Zante (too small and not as much to do as on Corfu) and Crete.  We stayed in Elounda and absolutely loved it.  Stayed in the Irene apartments and the rooms and owners are fantastic.

It all depends what you want to do on holiday...Elounda has some fab beaches nearby and plenty of places to visit within reach.  Mixture of nightlife to suit most - if you want more excitement then go to Malia (personally wouldn't touch it with a bargepole) or Agios Nicolaos (spelling?) which is a larger town.

Love visiting these places but, yes, Corfu does keep drawing people back, doesn't it?

Sue

I too have been to a few Greek islands, mainly in the Cyclades.

I think my all time 'other'greek island favourite was Symi.

Sooz - difinitely similar tastes. I've spent many a happy day in Elounda on Crete. It's one of the few reorts with a bit of character as most of the others consist of a strip that runs into the next strip. Great spots to visit are: Koukounaries in Skiathos - one of the best beeches in Greece and great location if you stay at the skiathos palace hotel. It's a very small island so it's easy to spend every night in Skiathos town which is wonderfully vibrant and cosmopolitan. Rhodes old town - a world heritage site and absolutely fantastic to eat in and wander round on a night. Great outdoor performances of greek dancing from a really professional rhodes dance troupe. Santorini - my personal favourite - stay in one of the hotels in Thira on the edge of the Caldera 900 feet up watching the sunsets - absolutely outstanding. The food and evening entertainment are great too (good rock club for us ageing hippies). The photography in Oia on Santorini is classic Greek. Symi when you first set eyes on it as you approach the harbour is also spectacular with all the neo classic houses piled on top of each other. For any committed Christians out there Patmos is also a must - it's where John the Evangelist wrote the book of Revelations. A visit to his cave and the Chorio at the top of the island with it's fantastic views are indeed a revelation.

I sincerely hope that I'll be just as inspired by Kalami and Corfu. I'm very fussy where I go and only Kalami and Paleo appealed to me so I'm really looking forward to visiting.

Chris, Spinalonga is one of the most atmospheric places I've been.  You can almost see and touch the ghosts of the place (OK I know you don't believe in ghosts, but you know what I mean!)

Al - one day I hope to visit Santorini, I was contemplating it for this year but as we have to take No.2 son with us again it was not a viable proposition.  Will be saving this for when it's just Richard and me (and yes, I am an aging hippy!!)  Don't limit your visit to just Kalami and Paleo, the whole island is worth seeing, especially Corfu Town, although I think I will be giving the town a miss this year as I want to visit places/do things I haven't had a chance to before! (it's a mid-life crisis sort of thing!)

Sooz - If you go to Santorini book the hotel and flights over the internet yourself - it's much cheaper than the expensive brochure prices (for Thira and Oia which are a must to stay at). Don't worry I wouldn't dream of missing Corfu town - I'm dying to try a ginger beer in the Liston. Most Greek island capitals are a must and very rarely disappoint. The one exception is probably Zakynthos town on Zante. Not as much character but it was totally rebuilt after the 53 earthquake so it's probably got an excuse.

Spinalonga is indeed atmospheric. It's also great viwed from the litle Tavernas in Plaka just a few hundred yards away on shore.

Hi Chris, I last visited Spinalonga in August 2001.  Why would the last leper have to be over 100?  Could have been a child when he/she caught it! But, anyhow, the ghosts are the memories, suffering and heartache that happened on the island!

Will definitely go back again one day!

Sue
