Corfu

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I am happy to have you all as my new friends and hope one day to meet some of you on my furture adventures.

So now I would like to share my 1st Corfu experience with you. I was fortunate to share this experience with my girlfriend Allison that I took with me for her 21st birthday and 2 other friends Tiffany and Justin. We were to travel across France, Switzerland, Italy and on to Greece where we would meet up with my parents who were arriving via Athens. Destination The Pantokrator Hotel in Barbati.

May 27th-Depart Los Angeles non-stop to Heathrow, London arrived on the 28th spent 1 evening in a rich part of town (south kensington) Paid way to much for a Guiness with Fish and Chips but boy was it worth the money.

May 29th-Early morning train ride from Waterloo to Paris on the Eurostar. I cant tell you how much I was impressed on such a precise rail system. I consider it my 8th wonder of the world. Upon arrival into Paris we had a 7 hour layover so we headed to the Champs Elysees and had a bite to eat. 8pm we board the Artesian night train headed to Bologna, Italy.

May 30th-Wake up after a very comfortable sleep considering the amount of Jet-Lag I was feeling. From Bologna we connected to Bari, Italy boarded a Blue Star night ferry the most beautiful ferry I had ever seen. Tip: The Superfast Ferries and its sister company Blue Star honor the EuroRail Pass meaning it only costs a 6 euro port fee for passage to Greece. Brilliant!

May 31st-Arrive in Corfu via Igomenitsa. Hire a cab to the Pantokrator Hotel. We were greeted by an amazing staff. The rooms especially the lux rooms are gorgeous and all have a view thats to die for. The next 2 days were spent traveling the island by rental car, dining at Agni Taverna (tasty food amazing atmosphere), and laying out poolside to remove the white from my body.

June 2nd-Arrive at the Gouvia marina to board a Bahia 46 catamaran which would become our home for the next 10 days. Thanks to Yanni, our brilliant skipper from Athens, we visited many ports and beaches throughout the Ionians. The following is a list of ports in order that we visited:
Sivota (Mainland)
Lakka (Paxos)
Gaios (Paxos)
Lefkas Town (Lefkada)
Vathi (Ithaca)
Blue Caves (Zakinthos)
Zakinthos Town (Zakinthos)
Sami (Keffalonia)
Fiskardo (Keffalonia)
Preveza (Mainland)
Parga (Mainland)

And then back to my favorite Island Corfu! We loved the Pantokrator so much that we stayed 3 more days when we returned from our sailing adventure. On June 14th we headed back through europe to make our way to England. This time we stayed in Florence, Italy for one night before heading back to Paris on the night train via Nice, France. Once we arrived back to London, we were fortunate to have met a great british couple while staying at the Pantokrator who offered us a place to stay before we flew home. We took them up on their offer and gained two new amazing friends.

Unfortunatly all good things must come to and end. I will always have Corfu in my heart and have already made a promise to myself to return in the not so distant future.

I never realised Americans don't get many holidays, my step father is American and he doesn't like holidays, so I assumed it was a cultural thing.

It makes me feel a bit guilty that we are able to have 2 holidays in Greece each year of 2 weeks each. Still we don't take it for granted cos you never know when you won't be able to go any more. We usually go to an island we haven't been to before in June, and return to one of our old favourites in Aug Sept.

Our friends laugh at us because we don't even think of going to any other country and we've been doing this for years - still each to thier own as they say - but they don't know what they're missing.

I never realised it was

Ryan and Jeannette:  Americans "don't get many holidays"?  That might be revised to read, "Americans get NO holidays."  Did you know there is no law saying that an employer has to give his employees a paid day off for things like Independence Day and Christmas?  Not even ONE day is mandated by law.  And as for vacations, well, fewer and fewer people are allowed them, and those who are allowed paid vacations get a total of 10 paid days off after one full year of work (which stretches to 2 weeks if you include normal "off days" like the weekend days).  But there again, there is no law mandating that anyone get ANY vacation time whatsoever.  None.  And if your firm goes under, or if you're having bad luck at sticking with one employer, well, then, you just have to skip the grandiose 10 days alltogether!  And start counting all over again (one full year of employment at the same firm may, possibly, permit you 10 paid vacation days off, if you're lucky, but it is not mandated by law at all).  In order for an American to get 2 2-wk. vacations per year, I think s/he would have to work at the same firm for something like 10 years straight with no time off.  See?  Now aren't you all grateful you're not Americans?  You should be!

Blimey Portia You poor Americans thats really flipping mean Rotton, Lousy system you have there Next time I bump into an American in Europe, I will appreciate what they have had to endure just to get a holiday. I notice your dates are not entered for your holiday, do I assume you are not getting one? I hope you will at some point. Blimey that has made me really cross

Me thinks we should go kidnap Portia and take the girl on holiday!

Hi Cloud

I've just returned from Corfu. and I can't agree with you more it is an amazing place. We stayed in Ag Stephanos East and I have never met such friendly, open, kind people in my life or in my travels anywhere.

Sadly, half way through the holiday I had a phone call from home to say my three year old springer spaniel had died from heat exhaustion. I was devasted. However, I cannot think of a better place to have been to receive such news. The place kind of soothed me and helped to ease the pain away. I can only say that Ag Steph was like Heaven on Earth, it took my breath away every time I drove back down the hill to the village or approached it by boat.

The only unfriendly person we encountered in the two weeks was from an English rep. Every single Greek, without exception, could never do enough for us, always greeted us with a smile, and showed us how you can live in this world stress free.

The evening my dog had died my husband and I walked to the beach at Kerasia and drank two bottles of wine in the Taverna. We asked the owner if he could get us a taxi and he had obviously noticed I was unhappy. He just went and got his car and gave us a lift home, refusing any payment.

This was only one example or the way they treat you.

The Corfiots have definately changed my life. I will never forget their kindness and hope that it will always make me a much kinder, considerate person.

What a lovely and moving post Jules.

I'm so sorry about your dog, but as you say, perhaps you were in the best place with some of the kindest, most understanding people,

Jules I cant imagine how you felt. Im deeply sorry about your dog. Thanks for sharing your life changing story with us.  I know your springer spaniel can never be replaced but in the future when you are ready and you welcome another dog into your family you might just want to name him after some place in corfu that helped you through such a tough situation.

Hi Jules, just read your post. So sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved pet but as Trace says, you were soooo in the best place, as you have yourself, discovered. Some of my friends here know that my family has recently suffered a trauma, where are we going to recover? Corfu.

I know I laugh and joke about on here, but you see, this site is soooo close to being in Corfu that I feel able to lighten up. When I get to Corfu (in 2 days) we will start to recover and be ready to come back to the "real world". I hope your sadness will soon fade.
