The standard should be set at 20kg for all travelers who are paying to sit on a seat regardless of whether they have booked over 6 months in advance or are on a last minute deal, lets face it the weight of all aircraft are known to the operators either fully loaded or empty, they will also know the spare capacity in which they operate.

the figure should be increased to 25kg for people going for 2 weeks where possible which again would still fall within the aircraft weight limits.

Using the above every person traveling would know the weight allowed and if need be would be charged accordingly for excess baggage by the airlines/carriers.

We always now use the bag type case with wheels and a pull handle because they are lighter, people should maybe look at their cases and what they weigh empty! we have one that is 7kg empty which is quite heavy and only leaves 13kg for baggage.

There needs to be one standard for everyone so that there is no confusion regarding weghts allowed, as for larger people im sure that the things that would be heavier would be their footwear, shirts etc would give very little extra in terms of weight!

Perhaps a solution could be to wear as many clothes as you could fit on yourself!!!!  You will look really silly but there is no restriction on a persons weight!

On a serious note, it is a good idea to wear your heaviest items i.e shoes, pants so that they don’t take up your weight allowance and you can take more items in their place.

Like Kerry and Dave said it is a good idea to buy a lightweight suitcase as some are really heavy without filling them with things.

Hi Martyn

I tried the site but couldn't get in to it at the moment. Have checked my tickets and it definately says 30kg free allowance. I must admit I'm a bit surprised, however, will check the site again later. Thanks for the airline info.

Will be correct Jules,

I know you're flying with First Choice, but who are you actually booked though? (if you are travelling with a tour operator)

I am going with First Choice and my baggage allowance is 20kg plus 5kg for hand luggage.  I don't think i have heard of such a high baggage allowance as 30kg - lucky you!

No Chris, as Martyn says, the 30kg allowance is standard at no extra cost with certain holiday companies (usually those for the more discerning traveller)

Hi Trace

We are booked with Meon Villa holidays and I booked the flights with them too that is why I was unsure of who the airline was. The tickets don't mention hand luggage but I presume that would be extra weight.

Hi

The scales were definitely working at Corfu airport last July when we came back  - we had to pay £30 because they said our luggage was over the limit. When we complained that we weren't charged going from East Midlands and they weren't any heavier we were told that we should think ourselves lucky we weren't charged on the outward bound plane. We weighed them before we went on holiday and they were just under 20 kg each!!!

Sometimes the luggage weight digital display facing passengers on the check-in desk isn't working, but the display on the check-in operators side may well be!

Don't just assume that the scales aren't operational!!!
