Further to Bill's comment above, yes you do need the "road fund licence" for Switzerland - but only for motorways. It's called a Vignette and is available at all major border crossings on the motorways)(and probably minor ones as well, but I guess you would have to ask. You can also buy on-line from the Swiss Tourist office in the UK. Cost is about £22 (at least that's what the last one I bought cost). Doing it this way can save time queuing at the boarder. The Vignette is effectively valid for 14 months the 2008 version runs from the beginning of December 2007 to the end of January 2009.

Our route takes from Calais, via Reims, Strasboug and Basle into Switzerland. We then head down to Milan via the Gottard Tunnel and then on to Ancona, via Modena and Bologna. The later sailing time from Ancona and the slightly shorter crossing suites us if we are in a hurry.

Further to Eco's comment.

I don't know if this is still the case, but certainly a year ago if you travelled via Switzerland you also needed to purchase the equivalent of road fund licence to travel through the country.  I understand that this can be bought at the border, but as we decided to avoid that route don't know much more about it than that!  Might be worth looking into though.

Yes, this is needed, makes a nice coloured 'stamp momento' on your windscreen, nasty security guard also made me buy one for my caravan as well after he and 'nice' lady official in uniform had arguement about it for a minute or so.

Petrolstations in France and Germany near the Swiss border (up to 50 kms away) offer these vignettes as well, at the  standard   price of   € 28,--

Another problem with the route through France, Switerland Italy is Milan is a nightmare to get through also and many people avoid that route.

The route that Eco points out is by far the best way, we do it twice a year. There are loads of places you could visit, it is a matter of choice and what interest you most as to where to visit.

A vignette is needed to use the Austrian motorways but can be purchased at the garages before you enter Austria they cost Euros 7.70 and the Brenner pass Euro 6. Its the cheapest route also.

We have just driven this route last week so if you need any info on it. Please pm myself or Graham.

Yes, Angela - the Tengentalle (ring road) around Milan can be slow.  Best avoided on a saturday morning when everyone in Milan seems to be heading for Rimini!

I also meant to add that there can be delays at the Gottard Tunnel (as with any tunnel through the Swiss mountains) at busy times as entry is traffic light controlled in order to ensure traffic seperation.  Note, also, that there aare now many cameras in the tunnels to catch those who break the speed limit or drive too close to the vehicle in front.  These measures have been itroduced as a result of the accidents/fires in the tunnels in the not too distant past.

Yes I have been advised by many people to avoid Milan Martyn but the route we have been using has proved the best one so far but we have noticed that it is getting busier and busier now on the German roads especially.

Keith - we have done the Ancona route also. The same route as Ecotrails first advised through Germany but instead of going through the mountain ski resorts (Cortina de empazzo) and across to Venice you stay on the motorway and go to the end of it and make your way down to Ancona. It is further to drive and the Italian motorways are toll roads also. The Ancona boats do not come into Corfu either so you have another ferry to get from Igouminitsa adds to the length of the journey and again more cost.
