I am driving  to corfu next week and wondering if there are any sights or places to visit that shouldn't be missed.

Last year we drove across Europe at break neck speed worried we'd miss our place on the ferry.

Flashed by speed cameras twice. Got a ticket in France. And was asked to take a breath test in Italy. I passed!!

Yet somehow I got the feeling I was missing something.

Duh!

So this year we are going to take it easy and have five days to make the journey.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Wow, that's a tall order Kieth! So many and so varied. Like a lot of people I usually run Dover, Dunkerque, France, Belgium, Luxenburg, Germany, Austria (Brenner pass), Italy, Venice. I have found interesting stuff in all these places but cannot easily give you advice cos it has usually happened when I got lost or was snowed in or looking for fuel or a nights lodging.

I always fancy detouring as you come down out of the Alps either in Austria or Italy, searching out some of those magnificent castles perched high on the mountain valley slopes. Or how about lake Garda just off the route (bet it's pretty expensive though. An easy one is to stop over in Venice, so much to see and feel.

Others will, I am sure give you better ideas of man made stuff to see, but trained as a biologist and geologist, I have no greater pleasure than just stopping and 'kicking over stones' in any number of deserted forests, marshlands, river valleys, shores etc. all along the route.

Thanks eco..l think a detour somewhere around the alps may be the ticket. If I discover a new rock formation I'll e-mail you. thanks

We are doing a similar journey in April except we are doing the Dover to Calais sailing and stopping over in Calais, Karlsruhe, Switzerland somewhere and Venice. (ferry from Venice)

I would add that the most expensive hotel is only £40 for both of us

Hi Keith.  Depending on which route you are going to take.  I went Munich to Villach to Venice.  Salzburg is well  work a stop over - it is a beautiful city and, if you allow yourself enough time, it is worth going 25 mins on the towards vienna and visting Mondsee which is the start of the Austrian lake district.

If you let me know your planned route I may be able to tell you some other places that would be worth stopping at - I lived in Germany for 20 years and spent most holidays touring so know of a few gems.

mikesharon,

hey you guys sound organized!!! I have booked the ferry from dover and the ferry from venice otherwise nothing planned. A good frind has passed me a homemade map....that takes me over the alps. I guess my best bet is taking in the sights of the mountains. have a safe journey you two!

Just a small word of warning if you're going through Switzerland although most people will know this I suppose. Switzerland is NOT in E.U. so there are border checks. I imagine alot of us driving to Corfu will be transporting some goodies and this can cause problems at Swiss border crossings. For example if you're carrying goods for someone else then don't have different addresses on the parcels, it's no big sweat but often the border gaurds are a little bored and can have a little fun trying to extract  paperwork out of you. I had one guy in my caravan so long I thought he was planning to live there....  , lucky his partner was a very beautiful Swiss lady.. and in uniform...wooooh.... so I just let him get on with it while I tried (unsuccessfully) to interest her in my knowledge of cuckoo clocks and yodelling.......

Hi Keith, You will find the France, Switzerland route can work out very expensive in road tolls and is not really that much quicker. We go dover-dunquerke, belgium, germany, austria(overnight stop) and then down to venice.Road tolls add up to about 15 euros.  Yammas  B & S

Further to Eco's comment.

I don't know if this is still the case, but certainly a year ago if you travelled via Switzerland you also needed to purchase the equivalent of road fund licence to travel through the country.  I understand that this can be bought at the border, but as we decided to avoid that route don't know much more about it than that!  Might be worth looking into though.

B&S's suggested route we have used several times and is certainly much cheaper in terms of tolls than going through France.

Cheers

Bill
