I promised myself a visit to the new harbour at Benitses in July this year, but a damaged sail forced a diversion back to Gouvia instead. Oh well.

There was a time, not that many years ago, when Benitses had a reputation similar to that of Kavos now.  How times change.

The salt flats are beautiful, every time I am in Messonghi I take a boat ride down to them, the water is calm, shallow and safe and it would be dreadful if that were to be spolied.

yeh! someone who agrees with me, i have always gone to the south stayed in benitsis and moraitika before settling on the legend that is messonghi i love it and its a great base to vist places like st georges(gorg beach) or issos beach, the fab restaurants in boukari and the beautiful lefkimmi. The beach isn't oo busy and the restaurants and bars are brilliant all are different with something for everyone

I work in travel and all the tour ops concentrate on the north however the mayor of messonghi and moraitika is really trying to get more british ops in and is meeting a number of them in the winter. i have to book flights and then accom (the christina) which i know for me works out more expensive as i could go to the north with an operator for so much cheaper but i don't want to, although the north is lovely and some great resorts i prefer to go for day trips up there.

come on people give the south a try its the best!

on the airport - i spoke to a few people and there is no way they want it and i doubt it will happen as its no more than an hour to all resorts in the south anyway from corfu airport they just need to extend it!

Keira

We stayed in Benitses for a week last september.  Popped back for a day in July to see one of the owners of the Restaurant we went to every day and he greeted us like family.

His first words to us Welcome Home. Those words bought tears to my eyes.  In all the time we have lived in Somerset none of our neighbours have ever welcomed us back from holidays with these words.

Could not make it back this September but hope to next September for a week.

We want to stay in Benitses itself as last time we were a twenty minute walk outside.  Anybody got any ideas for Apartments/Hotel like to know I have use of a swimming pool either on site or just a few metres away.

Viv

TO VIV D, I DO KNOW OF THE ROULLA APARTMENTS JUST ACROSS FROM THE CHINESE, THEY HAVE A SWIMMING POOL HAVE NEVER STAYED THERE MYSELF, YOU WOULD HAVE TO BOOK THROUGH OLYMPIC HOLIDAYS, WHERE DID YOU STAY IN BENITSES WE STAY AT THE KARINA A 15 MINUTE WALK INTO TOWN, LIKE THE CHOICE TO STAY AROUND THE POOL IN THE DAY OR VISIT LOCAL BEACHES AND THEN WALK INTO TOWN IN THE EVENING, I WONDER WAS THE RESTAURANT THE LAST ONE OF THREE IN THE MIDDLE THE VILLAGE STEAK HOUSE BY ANY CHANCE? HE REMEMBERS US EVERY YEAR!!

Hi Viv,

There is a pool at the Hotel Potomaki in the centre of Benitses which is right on the main coast road.

I stayed there in my more “young and reckless years” in 85 and 86 with the lads when Benitses was more like what Kavos is now. Now that I’m in my forties San Stefanos (NW), Gouvia/Kontokali and Kassiopi (this year) are where we tend to go to now. Having said that I agree with the other posts there are plenty resorts down south that get overlooked.

Check this link  www.potamakibeachhotel.com. I've looked at www.TripAdvisor.com and there are a couple of reviews on the hotel, it looks good on the link and it was fine when we were there, but that was over 20 years ago now.

Visited Benitses a few years back and it has certainly changed from what I remember it to be and for the better now that I’m older and more mature:-)

the reps parent company is german

nice to see comments about lefkimmi, its still unspoilt...

The transformation of benitsas is also  a credit to the local council...

I await the council in Kavos to do the same .....it aint gonna happen to many britts with business interests there ..

well the reservoir should be online next year and the new sewage sytem might work .....

We have been staying in Benitses for 31 years, and agree that there are some lovely places in the south, especially to the south of St George. Not too much tourism, but a few tavernas.

Benitses council have certainly improved the village. I have heard that they are going to build some restaurants and a small park by the side of the new marina, which will all help to upgrade the image of Benitses.

It is like going home when you return and we have always been made very welcome.
