Message boards are about communicating and not a spelling test.

If you're really that worried you can use the Google method as someone has suggested or type your message on a word document, spell check it and then cut and paste to the message board.

Job dun.

..There is nothing essayer than downloading IESPELL...That come up on tools bar and after you have done your posting run the ie spell and it goes through your posting (Befor post reply) checking for errors and alternate words....Chris

You are quite right Denis O.

However, whilst we don't expect or want anyone to agonise over it, this site has an international membership and it does help members whose first language is not English if those of us whose first language is English make the effort.  It isn't just about spelling, it's also punctuation.  Little things like using fullstops at the end of a sentence and a capital letter at the beginning of the next are standard in most languages and make posts so much easier to read.   It is also part of the Terms & Conditions of the site (No. 2.15):

  1. You agree not to use text speak and that as far as possible posts will be written in reasonable English for the benefit of all members. Posts will not be submitted using entirely upper case (capital) letters nor alternating upper and lower case lettering. We retain the right to amend/delete all posts at our sole discretion.

I agree to a certain extent Denis, but remember that sites like this one have a good number of members and guests from foreign countries, who may not have English as their first language.

Good spelling and grammar helps them understand us, and share in the overall site experience.

And of course, we can all learn from each other

I take both your points, Deedee and Trace and one should always try to spell correctly and write using the correct punctuation and grammar. We all have different abilities in that respect and the best you can hope for is that people give it their best.

Yes we do have a number of contributors whose mother tongue is not English and they make this site a more interesting and informative place to be. However, I doubt they come on here for an English lesson. I wish I could speak Dutch, German, French, Greek etc 1% as well as these folks speak English.

My point was simply that the website is about communicating and not who has the best command of the English language.

By the way, congratulations on banning text speak. It probably precludes a huge number of people under 16 but it does make life much easier on the eye for us old crusty’s.

I must confess I've never read the Terms & Conditions - UNTIL NOW!!!! And even then I couldn't find the clause set out in Deedee's post!

Whatever, surely the whole purpose of a Post is to communicate effectively what you want people to read and understand? As long as you give it your best shot no one can complain - can they??

My guess is that KAZ (Clevelands) had this objective in mind in starting the Topic??!!

David

Well said David. malc. ps I think David is right, in what he said, the power to communicate is far more important than small mistakes that we occasionally make and I know I would rather read a post with a few errors in that someone has had a shot at than not see a post at all. pps, WE all make mistakes that`s why they put rubbers on the top of pencils! lol.
