Just wanted to ask is smoking still widely acceptable in Greece?  As you know we have all these new rules and regulations about to hit the UK this Summer, do you think Greece will follow suit?  I can't imagine it somehow!  In fact i started smoking whilst living in Corfu!

I would never have thought it would happen in France but I see gradual changes there, a lot more non-smoking areas in restaurants etc.

Not entirely correct Windy, smoking in public places has been banned in Scotland  for almost a year now. It's wonderful to be able to go out and not come home smelling of smoke. It's also great being in a restaurant or other public area and not have to avoid smoking areas, this was particularly a problem when my son was young as he had asthma.

I have to say that I was surprised how easily and quickly it has become the norm and widely accepted even by smokers and I have to say that when I go down south now I'm even more intolerable of smoky places. If it can happen here there's no reason for it not to work in Greece or anywhere else - however.

As far as I know, it is now law for restaurants in Greece to provide non-smoking areas (correct me if I'm wrong anyone!).  Of course during the summer months most people are sitting outside, so that is often unofficially the designated smokers area.

I was on mainland Greece & asked for a non-smoking table in a restaurant recently, and was told by the owner that all of the restaurant was 'smoking'. so obviously if I am right about it being law here - it is not being enforced very well.

Hi Yvonne, you are quite right, in fact my Scottish husband keeps telling me off for that!  I meant England!

I was up in Glasgow recently and having now given up smoking it was really lovely to be sitting in smoke-free pubs and restaurants, if a little strange!

I still can't imagine it being enforced in Greece though.

There is a difference between Brits and Greeks when it comes to obeying laws, if we don't like a law we moan like hell and generally obey it, if Greek people don't like a law they simply ignore it.

I have some very Dear friends that lve in Athens, yes they are all Greek.

A couple or so years ago, they tell me that laws were introduced that bars restuarants should provide NO smoking areas.

some did some did not. I was told by my Greek friends that even though NO smoking areas were provided people still smoked, the reason so I was told is that for  example.

If the Eldest member of a Greek family smoked and they went for lunch or dinnner and booked a NO smoking table for 20 and he/she smoked then they would smoke and no one would say anything out of total respect for thier elders.

Greek people smoke and so do I, respect their ways as we should all respect each others.

Have a good weekend all

Bernie

I agree that the Greeks may well ignore it if it happens, and I would say that is even more likely on Corfu.

When it comes to new EU laws who obeys them, the Brits. The rest almost without exception, if they do not agree, ignore them. As these laws are supposed to be for all member states. We Brits, (on the whole) comply,  others use their limited Greek, "Avrio, Avrio". Even then they seen to think that if they ignore it , it will go away.

Now to be contraversial, if the UK joins the Euro, will we also be allowed to flout EU laws.

Yammas,  Colin.

Greek Euro MP in Euro parliament: "Yes, Brussels, no Brussels, three bags full Brussels"

Greek Euro MP back in Greece: "Right, so, we'll just carry on as we were then"

An (enforced) ban on smoking in public places is likely to cause riots!!
