Hi Gill (B) - Thanks for the info - I've ordered the Accursed Mountain from Amazon and is scheduled to arrive in March.

Dasia - I've just been reading the rave reviews on This Way to Paradise; Dancing on the Tables" and it sounds really good. Amazon, though, are quoting a very expensive price for a paperback (£34.45) so I'll look for a used copy somewhere.

Amazon.ca quotes an incredible $73.50!! I hope you find it, Gill, and if you do please post a review. I'll do the same if I locate a copy. It has a Greek publisher and may be available there.

I've bought the Greek for Love and The Island but I'm saving them for Corfu in July. Can't decide which is better - reading a book about Greece while actually there or while in England wishing you were there.

A couple of years ago I read a very strange book about a woman who ended up living on Anti Paxos but you never know whether its real or a dream. Can't remember the title

I think it might have been a book called 'Night of Rain & Stars', a bit of a 'chick lit' book, but i remember enjoying it loads.  A woman runs away from her life one stormy night on holiday and gets on a boat to another much smaller island, and then proceeds to live there amongst the villagers.   Is that the one Nikos?

I have read or have bought and have still to read most of the books mentioned and now I've just ordered The papas and the englishman.

My bookcase is also full of books about greece or corfu in particular. Have just read 'the greek for love' and really enjoyed it.

Would advise anyone who has not read 'it's all greek to me' to do so as it is very amusing.

Another book on the greek house renovating theme is 'Margarita's olive press' by Rodney Shields about his experiences on Zakynthos.

I had an e-mail recently from Amazon advertising a book I bought years ago and assumed would be out of print.  'On a Greek Island - A Personal Experience' by Fionnuala Brennan about a young couple who went to live on Paros for a couple of years with their young children. I've just re-read it and enjoyed it still even though their 'adventure' was in 1977.

There were 2 other books - Tales from a Greek Island by Roger Jinkinson and Everyday Life in the Village by Michael Saunders. Has anyone read either of these?

Thanks AlecH for pointing out Play.com!  I devour books, and over the years Amazon.co.uk have received the bulk of my custom.  Recently though they began using a new courier for delivering their "free postage " orders (on orders over £15.00) I had problems from the start with the new couriers - they will attempt delivery twice, but if you're out - tough luck the books are returned to Amazon.  Last week my books disappeared.  The courier would only tell Amazon that they left the books in a "secure" location.  No way!  They suggested I go knocking on my neighbours doors to see if they had received the books - I told Amazon what to do with their books and cancelled several outstanding orders too.  Amazon did refund the cost of the lost books, and offered me £3.00 as a token of their "regret".

I saw on a website that many others had experienced the same problem.  I quote one of their employees who said in his companies defence(This is a genuine quote!):

"errrm just a comment on some of the comments i have seen on ere i work for **** and i say if the cust isnt going to be in at time of delivery then y order the goods, IF U LOOK AT THE NAME OF THE FIRM IT SAYS **** ******** ******* (Name deleted by me- I don't want Nathan getting any writs!)THAT MEANS CUSTOMERS NEED TO BE IN the homes otherwise u will miss it now yeh i see we have annoyed some ppl in terms of not gettin the parcel on time but u pay for the service witch is not that much if u want more flexibale times n such pay more and u will get more thats what i say!! "

I wonder if Jon, who wrote the above is related to Vicky Pollard?

Anyway, while Amazon use this company they have lost my custom.  I was delighted to see that Play.com's prices are very competitive with Amazon's, even in some of the more expensive text books - and they offer free delivery.  But, does anyone know which company they use for delivery? I couldn't see it mentioned on their website.

A number of years ago 'The Corfiot' had an article on books written about Corfu or featuring Corfu. I tried to get hold of some of them. My favourite is called The Sun Worshippers by Elizabeth Harris. At the time it was out of print but I managed to get hold of it quite easily via my local bookshop who offered details of an out of print service, in fact I was even offered hard back or paper back. Another couple which I think are worth a read are The Facade Lady of Corfu by Spyros Plaskovitis isbn 960-04-0912-9 and This Rough Magic by Mary Stewart isbn 0-340-02202-7. Like many of you my bookcase is full of books about Greece or those which feature Greece.  I haven't read the Papas and the Englishman so I'll have to order that one. Thanks for the information on Play.com.

Sue
