I took my two daughters (18 and 14) to Zante for a week the last week in August and we stayed at Kalamaki which I would consider a family resort. We stayed at the Hotel Exotica but if I went back I would book the hotel opposite, the Venus Hotel. I went to have a look round it while we were there and picked up leaflet in reception. You can book direct, they have their own website. They will collect and return you to the airport free of charge and they operate a loyalty scheme which gets you a ten per cent reduction on anything you spend at the hotel, and any future holidays. When you have been there for a total of four weeks, say over a couple of years, they offer you a free week in May or October. They also have a few suites with two bedrooms, lounge and a garden area with table and chairs at a reasonable rate.
The resort is only ten euros by taxi from the airport so if anyone is booking a package and have to choose whether to pay for transfers I wouldn't bother.
I walked down the beach to Laganas which takes about 35 minutes. Not my cup of tea but it might have been twenty five years ago!
The airport is pretty much as everyone has said but it wouldn't stop me returning.
I spoke to some people who first went there 14 years ago. They said how much it had changed and that they use to have to use torches to get back to the apartment at night as none of 'the strip' was there. I asked where they were walking back from and they said if you went past the strip to the mini roundabout and turned right that was where they used to and still went in the evenings. I walked down there it only took about ten minutes and it was lovely. I think it must have been where the original village was and it was completely different from 'the strip'. Quite a lot of nice places to eat and not as in your face as the main strip of bars etc. I think thats what people meant who had been there a few years working who said that it was becoming spoilt it used to be lovely.
I didn't walk down there till my last day but if I went back I would certainly spend a few evenings down that end.
I found the meals and drinks to be reasonable and thought it was cheaper than where we stay in Corfu which is Gouvia.
