About 10yrs ago I bought a small tree (4 ft) from the local Garden place for about £10 with the advice 'put it in the biggest pot you dare, it wont fruit & may die in the frost'

All well and good - 2 re-pots later its 10ft tall and oddly doing rather well.  Even in the recent wet weather it seems to coninue to thrive and looks healthier than ever.  It even fruits but the blackbirds and thrushes love them just as they go black so i havent managed to harvest anything just yet. ....and way to much trouble to bother anyway!

Goodness knows how much I would have to pay for it today but I thought it may be interesting to find out how everyone else is getting on with their Olives trees - I cant be the only person who looks out on the patio and dreams of Corfu each time they check progress of their tree.

Mike, we bought a mini olive tree from our local garden centre last year.  It's only about a foot tall and lives in a pot on our bedroom windowsill, so it's got a long way to catch up with yours.  Glad to hear that they can survive over here though.  I love olive trees and always end up taking far more photos than necessary of ones I think are particularly beautiful

I've got a small one in a pot too - but so far it overwinters in our kitchen!

We have an olive tree in our lawn in the U.K. bought 2 years ago, survived the winters and is now 8 feet tall.

I'd love the idea of having an olive tree.  Mike, did you leave it out in the winter right from the start ?  Did you protect it at all, esp in the snow ?

We have a pomegranate tree, about 4yrs old, which is around 2ft 6ins tall and in an 18in pot.  It's a mass of flowers in the early summer and usually has about 6-8 fruits, although none of them have been bigger than a plum as yet.

I occasionally cover it in fleece when we are expecting a really bad frost but it has always lived outdoors.  I like the idea of keeping it in the kitchen but Sue may have some objections!!

The garden centre chap told me its the hoar frost that would cause it damage but its been covered in snow at times although its rarely that cold in Cambridge.

I have though about planting it into the ground but wonder if it would continue to do so well.

Reminds me of Greece every time I look out of the window

Went out and bought my olive tree at the weekend - getting on for 3ft high and shaped like a lolipop.  There are quite a few little olives too.  It was £15 so I think it was quite a good bargain.

The label gave very precise instruction on feeding, soil mixture etc, but it didn't say when to do the re-potting.  Can anyone help please
