Hi,

I live in a small, historical town in Ohio.  The McDonald's has small, golden arches and is built in traditional, colonial style.  There are ways to please everyone with this issue.  Personally, I prefer taverna meals, or even Greek fast food, as do my children who view McDonald's as a poor substitute for a proper meal!

Apart from the Big Mac Carolena..I never knew that you were from Ohio America....Ever thought of having where you live under where your avatar would be..I think its great seeing which  part of the world  members live in..It's true what they say we do all live in a global village.

I don't know about starving local workers, i thought Gyros was the Greek equivalent of a big Mac and a lot cheaper too! I was in Rome last year and opposite the 2000 year old Partheon was a McDonalds. It blended in ok like the one in Corfu Town but to me it was in the wrong area. A side street would have been better.

Bruce,

I am not from Ohio.  I am English through and through but unfortunately I live here as my English husband works here.  I spend as much time away from here as I can and it certainly isn't home.  The only advantage to being here is that it enables me to spend a lot of time in Corfu.  I live pretty much for my summers and smile all the way to England and Greece!

As for the avatar, I don't have a clue what to do!

Bet they didn't have any trouble finding the money for a few (or more) drinks though, eh?  [:D][;)][]

"I am no great fan of the golden arches myself but won't they draw in the 'I want England abroad' brigade leaving the tavernas and restaurants free for those of us who appreciate greek food?"

Yes, and that's wonderful!

As for Carolena:  How lucky you are that you live 2,500 miles east of "the dropping off point," California, where I live!  You are that much closer to Corfu than I.  And many hours' travel time closer, too, I might add.  It's nice that your husband seems to make pots of money (or at least pots of perks) and that you don't have to work.  I'm ever so glad America's immigrants are living so well.  At least someone is!  Alas, Southern California has gone to the dogs.  There are very few jobs that have ANY perks, let alone good, long paid vacations.  Someone mentioned my "break" or my "lunch hour," and I had to laugh.  WHAT "break"?  WHAT "lunch hour"?  Legal secretaries do not get such things, at least not working for sole practitioners.  And as I have posted many times before, it is not mandated that any worker have a paid vacation, so more and more employers in So. Calif. offer none.

I'll be lucky if I get to see Corfu once more before I die, let alone ever qualify for a paid vacation again before I die!

Wish I could afford to move to Ohio, where things are, apparently infinitely better!

Portia,

Yes, we are very lucky being able to spend a lot of time in Corfu.  My husband is a physics professor and gets more holiday than most.  When he graduatede, there were no jobs in UK in the universities and lots of positions in the USA.  I leave for England the day the children get out of school and return to the US 3 days before the start of school.  Most of that time is spent in Corfu.  We live off almost the same as we do at home while we are away but that is no real hardship.  A couple of euros each for snacks in the day (not McDonald's but each to his own), water to drink during the day and main course only in the evening.  I actually like it like that.  My husband comes to Corfu for 5 - 6 weeks and then returns for the peace and quiet of his lab while I stay on with the children.

Hope you manage a trip yourself before too long.  I think it must be much more expensive to live in California than Ohio, things are pretty cheap here.

Carolena

Hi Portia...I was always under the belief that California was the richest state in the richest country in the world.. how is it that the U.S.A can and does feed the third World and put more money into any disaster that happens around the world no matter where.. then any other country in the world  but can't afford to pay it workers five weeks paid vacation a year by law  ..It looks to me that American companies are where the British Companies were in the 1950's..  and it seems that it's all a load of rubbish that they have been portraying in the news and films over the Decades about California then..So the old United Kingdom's not a bad place to live after all

I am so sorry your employment laws are in such a state and if I were you I would seriously consider moving.

As for lunch breaks, I agree with you on that as I haven't had one for years and have the ulcers to prove it, lol. I generally have to work a 50+ hour week, not including travel time, just to make ends meet and get 2 weeks away a year. But taking all that into account and after watching a programme on Calcutta brothel children last night, I'd bet that you and me still have a lot to be grateful for.

Alison
