I have a home in Corfu because I love the Island and the people. I am also entitled to my opinion. I am not a Luddite and I do understand about progress, but progress to some is is not progress to others. I will say no more as some might not understand and be offended.

Whats a Luddite?

The term Luddite comes from a previous era to describe one who distrusts or fears the inevitable changes brought about by new technology. The original Luddite revolt occurred in 1811, an action against the English Textile factories that displaced craftsmen in favor of machines. The Luddites of today continue to raise moral and ethical arguments against the excesses of modern technology.

Agree things must move on, but have been going to Roda since 1988 and it was great then... no TVs in the tavernas...so no football. I must admit we do watch it when we are there but it was much better when there was none...and back then there were only 2 phones you could use in the village. It was absolutely brill then....all the locals were happy to entertain you etc, etc.
Having said all that, we still love the place and can't wait for June when we will be back there again.

No-one is saying you arent entitled to your opinion.  I have no feelings one way or another towards MacD's (other than I could murder a Big Mac lol) but one has to move with the times whether we like it or not.  Everything that doesnt change or adapt dies - which is why dinosaurs are extinct, and why no-one speaks Latin as their first language. Its also why the original Luddites (unfortunately) lost their battle.

We all accept that all change is not necessarily a good thing - however, MacD's would not have moved into Corfu in the first place if they didnt think there was a market for them.   Ive never been to Sidari, but I bet that MacD's is one of the busiest places there.  I once went in one in Paris (of all places!) and it was absolutely heaving - and look at the food available there! And Ive been in several all over Europe - and its the same story - all packed out.   Love them or loathe them, they are here to stay!

xx

McDonalds (according to a national newspaper) are experiencing such a downturn in sales that they are closing several branches in the UK (mainly due to the "Super Size Me" programme when the programme maker lived on McDonalds for a month).  Still, if people want the occasional artery clogger on holiday - why deprive them?!

What a dissapointing thing to say about children being locked away after 6pm. As a newish mummy of a 17month old princess i can't wait to take her to Kassiopi in June and let her sample all the lovely greek and corfoit foods that me and her father adore.

Hi Beckyboo welcome to the CTG

I think that Stuart said that with tongue in cheek and would not want children locked up all over their holiday....He was just joking like a lot of us on here..

By the way we're in Kassiopi at the end of June beginning of July

Everyone has different ideas of their holiday which don't always fit everyone elses.  I try to think live and let live.  For some people, a holiday is only seven days of a long year.  Most of them deserve to enjoy their well-earned break however they see fit as long as it harms no one else. There are plenty of other places to go for those of us who don't need McDonalds!

Julia

I completely agree Julia - trying to stop change in this way is well-meaning but, in the end, it can tend to fossilise a place.

And anyway, who should we elect as the arbiter of good taste?  I'm sure that, if I had my way, lots of people would be up in arms about some of the decisions I'd make!!

How about these for ideas:

  • All children to be kept in their rooms from 6pm to 10am;
  • Loud music to be abolished;
  • All tavernas and bars to play only Greek music;
  • No football games allowed to be shown (including the World Cup);
  • All large screen TVs should be destroyed;
  • The waterparks should be closed down and replaced with vineyards.

They work for me - but how do they suit everyone else?

Stuart

Stuart. Really  I'm not ready to start Holidaying on a Caravan site in Bournemouth yet. Are you?
