Thanks Spike, et al. I've applied for one of the new EHIC cards (because they're FREE!) but not having ever bothered with a E111, or whatever, are they worth the paper they're printed on? Anybody had cause to use them, or is holiday insurance more reliable?

thanks

tc

Hi tc

I use both, I always make sure I have my E111 for health insurance (and free treatment there and then, rather than having to hand money out to claim later) and then I also buy normal holiday insurance for the other things, just to be safe...

Never had to use either of them but best go prepared, knowing my luck something would happen the time I don't take out insurance! lol

Thanks, Natalie. Do you know if the E111 is just for the doc's. Or can you obtain free treatment at the Pharmacy/Chemist's?

regards

Thanks Spike for the reminder..can anyone tell me if

i still need to register the card in Greece?...or does the card automatically do that...if you become ill would you just take the card to the Doctors ?

thanks

Roseanne

Hi Roseanne.

The new system is just like the old. You only need to produce the card if and when you need medical treatment. No need to register it any where else.

As a reminder the EHIC card is to get reciprocal treatment in another European country, ie, like the NHS, going to your GP, minor A&E as you would at home.

Travel Insurance is for major items on the medical side, such as paying for hospitalisation, geting medivac back to the UK, etc etc.

If one did not have the EHIC, you will have to pay, and then claim back off your insurance a later date.

Yammas, Chris.

We renewed our E111's last August for a day trip to France (just in case!). We filled in the extra form for the new cards and received ours well before Christmas.  If you have done the same and have not received yours by now then you should defintely chase them up.

Thanks for reminding me, last year we filled out E111 forms including the application for the new cards for four of us. That was in May. My wife raceived hers sometime in August, the others haven't arrived, I will have to chase them up.

In 2004 my son was sick and we had to use the medical centre in Pyrgi/Ipsos. After his treatment I asked the Doctor how much I had to pay and he said nothing so I offered the E111 but he just smiled and shook his head. Whatever paperwork was involved I don't think he wanted to do it.

Paul.

Hi Tc

I'm not too sure about that to be honest.  Maybe someone else can answer this query as it would be interesting to know?

I applied for my EHIC card last year when I got my E111 forms stamped in the post office.  I received them within about a month.  Its far handier now you don't have to get those E111 forms everytime you go on hols, a great idea!  Just need to get my holiday insurance sorted now.

My dad got very ill in Kalami a few years ago,  he came down with a terrible virus and it was only that my step-mum was a nurse and could inject him that he was not hospitalised.  They were on honeymoon so that was a bit of a disaster and he was very ill for more than 6 months, it was very worrying.  However the doctor who came out to the A&A was lovely, really helpful and thorough and visited a few times to make sure he was on the mend.  He wasn't interested in seeing E111 or insurance details either, as Paul says its probably too much hassle with the paperwork.

Well you know how laid back the Greeks are! lol

Reading the link below from the Dept of Health. The EHIC is for medical treatment, as I indicated in my post above. There appears to be no proviso for its use either at a Pharmacy, and/or a Dentist.

It also states the card can be use to get medical checkups and treatments if one is pregnant, but you also need a Form E112 also.

It has been said that a number of doctors are not interested in the E111 as it was, and no doubt likewise with the EHIC. Usually because of the paperwork involved. Needless to say, that does not mean you will not need one, and that not all doctors would act in the same way. Better to be safe than sorry, and save a lot of money.

Thanks again, Natalie. I think Sailor Chris answered everyone's queries in one! Hope your dad is OK now.
