Sorry to see the Greek life board closed as it had been invaluable.

As there is nowhere else to post this request can anybody tell me what the Ikea courier company charge for deliveries from Ikea Athens to Corfu?

Any other tips for good places for furnishing a villa including TV and electrical stuff? Any on the web so we can sort out a budget?

I looked at buying in Ikea in Athens and shipping to Corfu but the logistics were tricky so I have bought in the UK and am shipping it all in March - cost around £3,000 for all the furniture for a five bedroom house.

Ikea will ship - you can e-mail the store direct - this is the reply I got:

Dear mr Joyce,

Thank you for your interest in furnishing your home from our stores.

We would like to inform you that purchasing products at IKEA requires your physical presence in our store, as telephone or on-line order is not available for the present.  Payment methods provided are cash and credit cards.

Also, our store offers you the choice of an external delivery company which is located near the exit of our store, where you can arrange the delivery of your purchases from our store to the place of your preference.  The charges depend on the number of the items to be delivered: 15 euro for 1-5 items, 22 euro for 6-10 items and 40 euro for 11-20.  For every extra item over 20, the charge is 1 euro.  The charges of the hauler are a little differentiated and depend on the weight of your purchases.  Usually, the delivery outside Attica requires one week to ten days approximately.

For more information concerning the transportation, please don’t hesitate to contact the Transportation company: tel. +30 210 3543 434.

We are at your disposal for any further information.

Best regards,

Customer Service Department

Thanks for that David J.

Did you find it impossible to source good furniture locally?

Regards

Corfusoon,

There is loads of lovely furniture on Corfu.  But if your time is limited, or even your budget (ie here you can buy in sales and/or get interest free credit), then buying in the Uk is a good option.

We bought most of our goods here and shipped them with Mondial.  Overall I doubt it was cheaper but we didn't want to spend our two weeks of holiday dragging four children around the shops!

Hi,

We purchased from Ikea last Winter & had delivered - it took about 2 weeks & some of the items were out of the boxes & even chipped when they arrived - they had been in the rain on a dockside somewhere !!! The contracted delivery driver in Corfu was less than happy to even transport the items to our house & was last seen swearing away to himself down our driveway. The best way would be to rent/hire a van & drive there & back.

The staff in Ikea were great though but it means another trip in a few weeks to buy replacement doors for our kitchen at our expence to replace the chipped ones which we will fly back with us - next time we will buy in Corfu.

I did look at buying everything  locally but although there are some good furniture shops in Corfu I thought the choice was a bit limited and like Terry and Julia didn't fancy spending all my holiday traipsing round the shops.

A friend of mine has furnished 13 houses all from Ikea in Athens and they do look great but as paulandmel say it takes quite a while to arrive, isn't that cheap to ship  and you'll have to spend a day or two in Athens in the shop so all in all it seemed to me easier to buy it here - transport companies like Mondial or Nomad will ship door-to-door. I actually bought most of my stuff on E-bay and the January sales and got some great bargains.

Cheers John!

Electrical goods go to 'Expert' in town, which is on the airport road 400m past the Potamos turning going into town. No UK TV works in Greece and the electrical prices are on a par anyway, apart from plasma TV's.

Plumbing fittings buy from Ktizma two shops down from Expert. Don't bother bringing out plumbing fittings from the UK; a waste of time especially with bath and shower mixers units. I did and my plumber nearly walked out! Or go to the Cooperative on the Pelekas road, tucked in on the left by the traffic lights and BP/Shell petrol station. They are also good for tiles.

Regards.
